According to the 2012 Fair Book (2013 not published yet), "Turkey classes will be judged on the same standards as are the Market Broilers." It's pretty vague: http://polkcountyfairiowa.com/fairbook.html
I'm looking into turkeys for spring (in Iowa), too. I haven't decided what kind. I'd like to raise some for meat this year, then keep over a few for breeding next year. I have 3 kids in 4-H, so showing is a possibility as well.
Thanks for the info!
The hearts are HUGE. I was expecting something Flinstones sized, and they're more like the size of chocolate hearts, so I can't really blame them for not wanting to eat them. I'll probably just compost them.
I bought a big thing of Nature's Plus Chewable Calcium for my kids, and then found out my kids don't like it! Can chickens eat it? Any concerns about amount?
It contains:
100 IU Vitamin D (as ergocalciferol)
500 mg Calcium (as lactate, aspartate, gluconate, carbonate)
250 mg Magnesium (as...
Lisa's my baby sister. I told her this was the place to get help. The structure faces south. She lives in Iowa (summer highs over 100°F, winter lows below 0°F). The first question is: how does one go about insulating and installing ventilation in such a beast?
My inclination would be to pour...
I'm looking at this week's Shopper's Supply ad. It's "Chick Days", which means feeders, waterers, incubators, heat lamps, etc are all on sale. They also have Nature Wise (Nutrena) feed for $1 off per bag. Sale is 3/16 - 3/21.

Free-run chickens?
Of course, then you have chickens with movable pens who may not have 80 acres, but who do have fresh pasture every day. And what about people who have a lot less than 80 acres, but whose chooks are free to range within a smaller area? My backyard is a full...

This is Iowa. Doesn't EVERYONE have a grain elevator near them? I don't have a pickup, though.
OK, now I'm really thinking about this. I'd like to do some meat chickens this year, but I'm not so sure about the cost. If buying by the half ton would really make a decent dent in the...
Speaking of feed, what do you all use, and where do you get it? My closest feed store only stocks Purina, which I can't use, because I boycott Nestle. I haven't been to TSC or Shopper's Supply yet, as both are more of a drive. I'm in DSM at least twice a week. Ankeny & Grimes are close, but I...
Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yeah, I think so, too. I don't, however, want to get a couple of years down the road and have a bunch of elderly hens that have stopped laying, so I was thinking I'd start out with 4-6 this year, and add a few more every year or two after that. SOUNDS...

I grew up on the east side. When DH got out of the Army, we moved to the 'burbs.

Oh, several times. I'm sure I'll decide several more times before I place my order.
Hi. I'm brand new to this site. I just registered after spending yesterday & today looking through the archives for info. I'm married with 4 kids, 2 cats, and a dog. I'm in Iowa, and I'm planning to get my first chickens this spring. I have a shed that I'd like to convert for a coop, so I've...
