Call me a bad parent but I always sneak in vegetable scraps they don't like inside a bowl of oatmeal which they love! But besides that they love berries, when in season its blueberries, elderberries, cherries, raspberries. But boy they love watermelon also. And certain time in seasons i take...
I just want 2 or 3 wild turkeys, and not to picky with meat but im sure they are mostly dark meat. Be nice to have just a bundle of wilds for protections and they can teach some foraging skills to domestic turkeys. The domestic I have raised were terrible at foraging, chickens taught them a...
I wonder myself if there could be a no feed turkey, but I suppose it would be pointless as it would have no reason to come back home. It would technically be wild lol. But im interested in a turkey that could forage most of its diet, with minimal feed and that is why I am interested in wild...
Where do you manage to obtain your Merriam Turkeys? How are then foraging wise, i'd like to have something who can manage foraging well and have good predatory instincts such as great flying abilities.
Im actually curious myself if anyone has raised Eastern wild or other wild turkeys. Im thinking of getting some from a place called Iowa Turkey Farm, they raise the eastern wild turkey, it's pure blood and all just also domestically raised. I'd like to have a turkey with minimal feed costs that...
When I was raising Turkeys I had trouble getting them to go around a forage, they had a lot or area to do that but they stayed within a very short distance. Be careful leaving food out though, I did that a few times when the turkeys wanted to roost and started attracting racoons.
I thank everyone for their replys, I think in any moment a chicken is suffering id be ready. Im still wonder why I succumbed to emotion, not long ago I had a chicken drown in the ducks pond and I buried it without feeling to much. Im sure when thanksgiving comes around ill be ready, Its...
I officially culled my first rooster joining legions of many people before me, though it was one of the toughest things I had to do in a long time. He was a Rhode Island rooster the smaller of the two, and considering we had three roosters for 8 hens, it became an excessive amount with all the...
I suppose its depends in that I think if you incubate them she will keep laying so you can keep getting eggs for more poults, or let her do it her self and she will lay a good clutch and no more, but theres a beauty in letting a hen raise them. Are they real eastern wild turkeys? Im curious...
This is a very good post for people raising turkeys. I have the same issue with one turkey, though hes 4 months old, but I assume its the same issue. Its looks exactly the same,
Im gonna go completely off topic and ask what is fermented rice I have never heard of it? Im always looking for new recipes for rice, id love to see one. And how funny it must have been to see them all buzzed, makes me wonder can you give turkeys or chickens beer?
My question is regarding what the possible breed, sex, age is on these turkeys. I figure I have a black, blue slate, though the rest not to sure especially the grey looking one, possibly crosses. I purchased them in June, early june, from a man saying they were eight weeks but looked much...
Im sorry that happened sometimes you can get really attached. I let mine free roam all the time but the stay extremely close, just a bit to close so I dont worry to much. DO you think he could have joined a wild turkey pack passing by or something?
