We're pretty limited on adding any more chicken-specific space, but they get at least 3 hours of supervised free range time every day....so I think they're pretty happy.
I've been told they're somewhere around 4-5 months....not laying yet.
As for the floor not being secure...why? They're in a cozy two room a-frame in a southern california urban area. More threat from gang bangers than predators.
The seem to really like laying right up against each other...
So I've tried a few different setups (diff. heights, widths, locations etc) for our two girls, and they still insist on just snuggling up together in the nice thick pine shavings. Is this fairly normal?

Yeah, there is still mucous and it still stinks, which is why I'm convinced that its Coryza. I clean them off twice a day just so I can keep an eye on them, and they are on day 5 of the Duramycin treatment. If there is no improvement after the weekend, I'm going to try something else.

Yeah, yeah...I got it.
I agree they look young - might need another 4 -6 weeks to lay.
Good to know....we'll just wait.
Why do you suspect they have Coryza? They don't look to have symptoms for it in the pictures - typical signs are swollen or puffy head/face, watery eyes, sinus...
lol.....honestly I have ZERO experience with what the various breeds are supposed to look like. The kid that was grabbing them for us just mumbled something about "I'm pretty sure they're Rhode Island Reds."
This was the same kid who when we said "we like that one" proceeded to chase her...
Based on the stench of their nasal discharge, I believe it to be Coryza. No other symptoms though. On sunday I started them on a run of Duramycin since it was all they had at the feed store. So far they may have improved, but I'm not too sure.
Is there something else I should put them...
We purchase two (not RIR) hens from a local feed store last saturday. The people running the place seemed a bit iffy on their ages, but thought they were about 5 months. One is slightly larger than the other. They seemed to have settled into their new home nicely...and are fed well and...
