Wichita Cabin Coop - Build Journal

Thanks aart. We had a 45 street elbow as well, so I sawed off some of that additional piece and things seem to be working. In general, we've moved to maintenance mode. We have sand/pdz and have to adjust closer to the 4:1 ratio, it gets a bit smelly thus far. I also ordered some horizontal...

Yes, we have some touch up painting to do though. I also think I need to move a roost as it's too close to the front door.

    2014 March Coop Challenge

Here's a couple photos from ours just before the last parts got painted. It's an inverted Wichita Cabin Coop with an elongated run.

Coop Build Day Last There is still some touching up of paint to be done, but for the most part our coop is completed and the chicks are now on night #2 of living in their new home. We had to move them in to the hen house by hand and DW had to bait the chicks with some weeds to get them to walk...

I don't know about you, but installing the hardware cloth on the corners where you had to cut out a small square was the hardest part. That and getting the spacing right so that it didn't buckle up in one spot.

Wichita Cabin Coop - Build Journal

Didn't spend too much time the last several nights. I got the window on to of the nest boxes framed then got the plexiglass installed another night and finally today I installed the assembly on the coop. I also got the vinyl for the hen house cut and installed. It's padded so should be...

Got the lids for the nest boxes made and put on today as well as the door for the hen house. We had some left over bricks from the previous home owners and put in a brick path in front of the run.

The transition is pretty easy. Unlike framing a house, it has the rafter boards floating on one side of the 7 ft back wall and depending upon where you are on the 6 ft section, it's either the same or sitting in a notch in the boards. For the eaves, they are toe screwed in using 3.5 inch screws.

Wanted to take a moment to recognize a blogger who I've been following for years. Yesterday she had an MRI and it was determined she has a recurrence of cancer. Please keep her in your thoughts. http://annieskitchengarden.blogspot.com/2014/03/march-12-2014-saying-goodbye-to-annies.html?m=1

Here is how far the door comes down on my head. Should have some more progress pictures tomorrow!

Ha! No, it's not THAT far down! The bottom board on the coop you have to step over is a 2x6 and the base also rests on the concrete block, which is another 6" less, so it's only around 2-3" that I have to duck down.

Like you said, since I'm building it in reverse the roof line does impact how high the door is. The door opening itself is 60". I'm 6'2" and have to duck down just a bit, which I'm sure that I'll pay for at some point with a good head knocking. Fortunately, the top row of concrete block under...

Sorry Chesca, we're out on the metro east side of things. Don't know anyone in those neighborhoods although places that have farmers markets are a bit more friendly to chickens it seems.

We spent the weekend working on the coop. Ran out of plywood so we ran to Lowe's for one more sheet and some more 2x4s. I think that'll do us though. Just need to make the hen house door, nest box lids, roost, hen house door and trim work and we'll bee done! I say that knowing full well that...
