Similar question and yes I know the stewpot is an option although not for me personally. Charles will sit there and eat with me when I feed everyone. But turn my back on him anywhere he thinks there is a hen and I’ll be charged. I noticed it first when I would go in the coop while a hen was in...
Welcome Abu!
We are in Upstate New York, US, on the border of Canada. It is still 0 degrees here, raining all the time, windy, and largely a summer day in the UK. I have one roo (now) who is a remarkable defender. Huge to boot. A Buff Orpington. I cannot tell if he is doing his job effectively...
Being a rooster.
Charles and his flock of seven hens have been together since they were born. Charles was always more submissive than his brother Henry. I adopted out Henry because of fighting. The same day Henry was adopted Charles reordered the flock. He now crows. (All freaking day). He is...
Yep. I will do that. I wanted to give to a battered woman’s shelter or something. But any good cause will work.
In the NY area? My eggs are likely fertilized too so you wanted to hatch any there is that - either BOs or a BO/Black Australorp mix depending on the hen.
My advice (borrowed from others here) is to go on Craigslist. I had an extra roo and he was adopted to a good home in less than a day.
As for crowing - omg yes. My Charles crows all freaking day especially since the weather became nicer. Luckily we have hurricane strength windows and he is a...
I haven’t weighed my boy but he is almost twice as tall as the hens (he is BO and they are BOs and Black Australorps). I hope he doesn’t grow much more. It seems like he is the size of an ostrich when my girls invite him. Finally caught the invitation behavior as opposed to him just having his way.
Likely my awful photos. He had a sheen of green to them. Very pretty. The hens don’t really seem to have that sheen or at least they don’t presently.
Oh my. Five boys! I only have seven hens so two was one too many for my girls once they became hormonal and the fighting started.
Black Australorp but yep! Me too. As we may move in a year or two, may one day have 8 more remarkable layers and a roo to donate. Seven hens and minimally I get six eggs a day. Now that temps have hit 50 Charles seems content to crow alllllllll day long. Allllll day long.
I hear you. Pun intended. Charles hardly crowed at all when we had a second rooster. Literally two hours after I adopted the other guy out Charles started talking. Being alpha now I guess is a thing. He chatters all day long. Definitely when the food is coming and after I leave. And then…. All...
Crop science was a big thing back when I lived in Illinois! Me, statistics and measurement. Most of the things people hate. 🤣 Now I am going to try and buy students off with eggs. Do your assignment, get an A AND a dozen eggs. I have them coming out of my ears now. Lol.
