I building an open coop/run as well. I really don't have the money to invest a lot in it (man those are going to be some expensive eggs) so I'm trying to buy as little as possible. I'll post my idea on another thread so I don't hijack this one.
North central FL here. Mine are 2 weeks old and I have them in a brooder under the carport and want to change from the heat lamp to a regular 100w bulb, but too was concerned about to low temps. They're in one of those upside down box with a wire bottom brooders, so basically completely enclosed.
15 minutes a day is alot of time if youve got more than a few chicks. Mine just moved outside yesterday, so now they're getting even less than before. When they were in the house my wife would talk to them, pick them up, etc throughout the day. Now its just a couple times a day to check on them.
I was wondering the dame thing about moving them out. I dont have a good place to put a brooder inside and felt that they were outgrowing their box. Mine are a little over a week old and I moved them to a brooder under a detached carport (its only open on the front). The brooder is completely...
I'll be selling the eggs. I'm planning to free range as much as possible to cut down on what I have to give them. I plan on talking to the local grocery stores to see about getting their older produce that they can't sell and giving it to them as well. As mentioned, I plan on the coop just being...
I would get more rooster, but when I stay over at my g/fs house they wake me up at 3 or 4 in the morning and they seem keep on crowing. Its not a predator, because everything else is quite. If I got up early is wouldn't be a big deal, but I can't go to bed late and get up early everyday. If it...
I'm wanting to get my first flock of chickens. I'm pretty sure I want to go ahead and get what I'm going to get instead of adding a little at a time. I'm thinking about getting 25 RIR, 10 leghorns, 8 EE, 6 Barred Rocks and a RIR roo. I know that the ratio will be a little off with only 1 roo...
I started using a game camera last year. I went with a WGI X6CG. It'll do pictures and video, 6mp, and its compact. It was out in the woods for months in rain and cub freezing temps. It was in a lockbox though which helped keep it out of the weather a little more. The wireless kinds are...
I wondered the same thing about the wire on the feet, but someone had mentioned to me that some birds are kept in raised cages and are fine. The birds would get let out at least a few hours a day 3 or 4 days a week, at minimum. The "salad bar" idea sounds like a good one though. I realized that...
First one is about the run. I read on another forum that someone used sod in their chicken run then laid chicken wire over it. It allow the birds to have fresh grass and bugs without letting them eat all of the way down to bare dirt. Has anyone else tried this? and did it work for you? I wonder...
I would just do it, but I've got one problem neighbor 2 doors down that would call and my county is extremely strict on codes and such. I've got a long narrow lot. Approximately 159'x1400+' IIRC. The house sits at the back of the property by the lake. I plan on putting the coop/run about a 2/5s...
Well I got what I consider t be semi good news today. I tried to send my county commissioner an email, but it said that it got re-directed. That was back when I first posted about this. Today I get an email with a name and number thats says to call to discuss the situation. The fact that its...
Most of the county (I'd say about 90%) is zoned AG if I'm reading the zoning maps correctly. The land across the street is zoned AG. It looks like all of the lang is pretty much AG unless its in town or water front. Since I'm on a lake and so are my neighbors I don't have anyone's property that...
