I am not certain what exactly attacked her, it could be anything. I can tell you that with our experiences with hawks they usually go for the head first, ripping it clear off.
To treat her, you will likely hear different things from different owners. We have had several predator attacks...
I hate to disappoint you, but I have never experienced a hen's eggs changing color. There is a bit of a difference before they molt, and after -- but never a change in the complete color of their egg. Just brightness and dullness of the same color. Where do you live? We keep all of our blue...
1,001 times! And you will never get the same answer!
When I first researched this I ran across an experiment/article from Mother Earth News http://www.motherearthnews.com/real-food/how-to-store-fresh-eggs-zmaz77ndzgoe.aspx that may be helpful to you.
I, personally, keep the eggs that I am...
There are a few things we do when we have egg-eaters:
- add more bedding to the nesting boxes (we use shredded paper and pine shavings in the winter)
- make certain they are getting enough calcium (adding oyster shells to their feed)
- collect the eggs as soon as you can after they lay
- don't...
When my pullets get ready to lay they are always seeking a nice quiet spot away from the others. Usually, they stay in the nesting boxes when I let them out in the morning (mine free range).
I am not certain about brooding with a roo in the coop. My broodies have always looked for a quiet...
I'm still thinking hens. Where did your sister get them? Online or locally? I ordered my EE's online through Murray McMurray Hatchery (**best hatchery**) and all, but one, had a comb at nine weeks, and one had more than a comb (profile picture).
The one without any comb turned out to be...
Is it a "healthy" restaurant? When we lived in California they served "4-1" egg items which meant 4 egg whites to 1 yolk. I am not 100% certain though.
Here, at home in VA, I would call it an "Oh my goodness...the double-yolk hen is backed up and DANG that's a BIG EGG!" :)
It is also not aesthetically pleasing. We have irregular sections in our yard that we have successfully covered with fishing line. You cannot even see the line unless you are really really close, or a branch falls and is hanging from the line. It is high enough that you can walk underneath...
I am looking for a group of like-minded individuals to collaborate with here in Virginia Beach. I live on the border of Virginia Beach/Chesapeake, and love LoVe LOVE my chickens! Anyone out there in this area?
We're on two, but always looking for more. Fantasies of tearing down newly developed neighborhoods and reconstructing farms run through my head . . . . :)
When we lost all of our brood but one hen we locked her in her coop for a couple of weeks. She was traumatized (or it seemed to me she was) by losing her girlfriends. She stayed in the coop where we fed her and would "communicate" with her through the walls. In the meantime, we purchased more...
