MY ladies are sleeping and pooping in their laying nest! WhY???

Thanks! That's some great info you shared. I'm always happy to learn more about how to take care of my little precious ones. I never considered them getting heavier as they get older, but they certainly are bigger than when I fist got them! I've taken the nest out for the night, and will put it...

MY ladies are sleeping and pooping in their laying nest! WhY???

BTW, I love your idea about turning the powder into a paint. I had the hardest time trying to get it evenly dispersed. I may try the paint thing next time. Plus, I can imagine it helps with not breathing in the powder when spreading it. Thanks!

MY ladies are sleeping and pooping in their laying nest! WhY???

The johnson's stuff says it's strictly just Diatomaceous Earth and there's nothing added. However, I checked the coop over as well as the chickens really well and saw no bugs! I checked the roost pole and noticed that in the spot where they sit, the wood is very soft, (They have their spot and...

MY ladies are sleeping and pooping in their laying nest! WhY???

I used Johnsons Poultry lice and mite powder, but this was a few months ago and they didn't seem to have any reactions. I made sure to check them everyday for skin irritation or breathing problems and there was nothing. Just dying mites! Yay! The mites went away in about 2 weeks. I haven't seen...

MY ladies are sleeping and pooping in their laying nest! WhY???

It's just odd, because I've had them for almost a year now and they always use their roosting pole. My pole is round though, maybe I need to change that. I'll try taking the box out at night and see how that works. I still don't understand why they would poop where they lay. I thought usually...

MY ladies are sleeping and pooping in their laying nest! WhY???

So, out of the blue, my hens (I only have 3) have started sleeping and pooping in their laying box, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. The only explanation I have is because it's getting colder here and at night it's around 9 Celsius right now, I wonder if they are cold and the box...

    Crusty feathers???

It's definitely mites! I'm freaking out now! =( What can I use to clean out the coop and rid it of these nasty pests? I have ordered some mite and lice powder on amazon. Delivery time says sept. 13th-19th. Hopefully it will get here quick. What can I do in the mean time while waiting for it...

    Crusty feathers???

One of my hens has crusty dirt on the base of her feathers near the skin. But it is only on her tail feather area and under her beak and the upper sides of her neck. Today she has been sitting in the run, not sun bathing or anything, just sitting and sleeping, which is unusual for her. Any ideas...

    Little bugs on my hen!

So my largest hen has had a runny nose for the past 3 days. I have been trying to give her good foods and herbs to help her. Seeing as it has not been cold the past few days or nights, I was unsure as to why she was having a runny nose. I have looked at her every day to make sure there were no...

Moved to new location of the yard and chicks escape to lay in the old location!

So I've had my chicks for about 2 months now, they are doing great and lay one egg per chick a day. We have three nesting boxes for them inside but they will only lay their eggs outside in the sun, if they are locked in the coop when they are ready to lay they go insane and literally try to ripe...

Shoo Flies Don't Bother My Hens!!!!!

I am having some serious issues with flies in my chicken coop. I'm in Italy and the summer days here are incredibly hot! What can I do to ward off all of these flies? The coop doesn't smell bad and I clean it twice a week. They dont seem to bother the hens but they are annoying and I just hate...

Should I keep feed in my coop at all times?

So I'm new to having chickens, one week new to be exact. So far we have been keeping their feed full and in the coop with them at all times. During the day they are allowed to roam freely in the yard and eat the grass, bugs, and grit. However they willingly spend most of their day inside the...

    New and Ciao from Italy!

Hello everyone! So I just acquired 3 hens and I am pretty clueless on how to care for chickens but I am extremely excited about learning and I'm sure I will have tons of questions to ask. I'm from a little town in Northern Italy and live in a small ancient village on a mountain. We decided to...
