Hi there. I just picked these brown chickens up today from someone down the road. They don’t know what breed they are? They are small, maybe a large Blanton size. They are brown with black tails and a few black feathers around the neck. I’m in Australia just fyi. Maybe it’s a brown Japanese...
It’s summer here in Australia, 100 plus during the day. So I leave my 4 week olds outside without the lamp on. If we get a cooler night tho I turn it on. I’m not really able to accurately decrease their heat over time, I find they are a bit tougher than given credit for.
So I’ve incubated around 4 lots of eggs now. And every time I get less than a third that hatch. I’ve put a thermometer in my incubator to make sure the temperature is 37.5 which it seems to be. The humidity is either really high or too low. It seems to be on either extreme, but it’s generally...
Hi this little guy hatched yesterday and I was pretty happy to see that he may look like a tux? What do you think?
I know the guy I got the eggs from had mostly the dark brown range color with a few A&M white ones in there. Fingers crossed!
Thanks. I’ve just about finished building them a big pen with plants and shrubs, so maybe that will do the trick. I need to move them in their so that will probably disrupt things for a while.
I don’t know if that rule applies or not... I have a white male with spots on his head that I was told was a female. I can tell he’s a male because of the white foam they excrete and he’s mating the hens. I think checking to see if they have that foamy stuff is the surest way to tell.
Hi Everyone. I’m from Melbourne Australia and I’ve had caturnix quail for around 4 months. It’s spring time here and they’ve been laying now for around 3 weeks. I have 2 roosters and 6 hens in a large rabbit hutch. One of the females has laid 4 eggs in the same place in the sheltered part of the...
Congrats! They are adorable.
I just had 4 hatch. I was wondering if any of your chicks looked like this darker one in the middle? Is that what the common brown ones looked like?
More of an interesting hatch read... So, I got an incubator because I want to hatch quail. I ordered some in the post and now the ones that weren’t cracked or broken (only 11/26) are due to hatch in a few days. The eggs are full and it’s very exciting!
My family have ducks and chickens... so my...
If you think about it, a mother duck lays her eggs very close to water. I think sometimes the area may even be soggy. I guess it depends on the breed, but it would make sense for duck eggs to be able to cope with higher humidity. My incubator is very difficult to control the humidity, I haven’t...
Thanks. I know my sister always moves broody chickens into a separate pen. Otherwise the other chickens just keep laying on her egg pile, and you end up with no eggs!
So my mum gave me some duck eggs to incubate, which are around 16 days into their incubation now. A week later one of the ducks went broody and is now sitting on a pile of chicken eggs confusing I know they should separate them! But this duck is known to be a bit unreliable and she’s never...
They change color on the outside? I have candles them a few times and they definitely look different to the other duck eggs that haven’t been incubated.
Does the yoke in a rotten egg look different than a yoke in an unfertilized egg when you candle them?
I was gonna try that but I use the flash light on my phone... so not sure! The eggs definitely look different to an infertile egg... pretty sure there is something in there. I just hope it’s developing properly. I have a feeling something isn’t right with them
