My ladies totally prefer the bantam over the other rooster. And he does an awesome job of protecting them and finding them food. He is so fun to watch. Hope yours continues to go well too.
I was going by the advice of having 1 rooster for every 8-10 hens. I hadn't heard of keeping more hens per rooster until after I got the roosters.
It is working out really well though. The little bantam has taken over. The larger red is maturing and starting to mount some ladies too...
Update - I added a small roost just big enough for Red in the corner of the coop. One of the crazy little Sussex ladies was still trying to mess with him by standing under the roost, hopping up, and attempting to bite his toes. She's such a little jerk! Luckily, I put the roost just above her...
I know he's not technically being bullied, but it is the easiest way to describe it. Some of the ladies are tolerant of him, but there is a group that just won't let him be. In all honestly, I think all chickens are just natural bullies. They're more cliquey than middle school girls :D:D
As for...
Yep - package deal. Plus I plan on adding about 5-10 more hens and I was worried that would be too overwhelming for just 1 rooster.
Excellent idea - I am planning on building a temporary one this afternoon. :)
Agreed, but I'm really hoping they manage to stay tolerant of each other. :fl
Thanks. The one who is having issues is not a bantam, but a young NH red. He will end up bigger than the rest in time and I'm hoping he starts standing up for himself as he reaches maturity. My bantam is actually the one who has no issues at all.
The NH red is good during the day as they are...
I recently added 2 roosters to my existing flock of 16 full-sized hens. The girls are 23 weeks old. One of the roosters (Buddy, a bantam cochin) is about 1 year old. The other (Red, a young NH red) is about 3 months. I'm adding their names in here just to make it easier to follow. I typically...
I recently added a young NH red rooster to my flock. He is about 2 months old while my ladies are about 5 months old. He is super shy and the ladies pick on him a bit. At what age do roosters typically start acting roo-ish? He is so sweet and I'm sure he will find his confidence as he gets...
I added 2 roosters because I plan to add 5-10 more hens. If they start overworking the current ladies, I'll get some saddles until the new hens are introduced.
I recently picked up a pair of roosters who were raised together - a blue cochin bantam and a NH red. I currently have a flock of 16 full sized hens that are 5 months old. The red is about 2 months younger than my hens, but is basically the same size. The cochin is 1 year old and obviously much...
I just wanted to pop in here to announce that I got my first egg! It may be tiny, but I still love it! I can't wait to start getting more! :wee:woot
If you're wondering, my hens are just over 19 weeks. I'm not sure which one laid this, but I have australorps, barred rocks, and speckled sussex...
