    roosters in the suburbs

I mistakenly got a Rooster out of one of my supposed pullets, I live where roosters are illegal so I knew I'd have to get rid of him. However, when my neighbors found him out they told me I must keep him. I guess they like the "country feel" he's now 6 months old and crowing daily starting...

do chickens need to be free range

I have not had the courage to let the girls out yet mostly because of the dogs around us. I am afraid they will fly over the fence and we have several dogs in other yards that would gladly have them for lunch. I have never clipped wings before and don't know if I want to try, the fence is 6...

do chickens need to be free range

My question is when it is time for them to lay eggs will I need to keep them in the enclosed area so they will lay their eggs there or if I let them free range will they go back to their coop? I thought for sure I was gonna be having to do an easter egg hunt everyday with mine cause they free...

    Normal laying rate??

I have 3 hens ( 1 Ameraucana, 1 BSL, and 1 SLW) I get 3 eggs most days, Occasionally I only get 2. They seem to be laying about 6 days a week each. They have all been laying about a month now

    Your Homemade Solutions Please

@Sunflower - I'd say it's about one dime sized hole where you want the top of the water in the pan to reach(inch or two from the bottom), I just used a drill for it and only did one hole cause I have to cover it with my finger when I fill the bottle. It's simple to fill, just uncap the rubber...

    Your Homemade Solutions Please

I just got this put together today, We have the Culligan setup at work and I just asked the guy if he had any i could have. They're $7.50 to buy but this one had a scuff on the side so I guess they just give those away. So the 5 Gallon bottle plus $2.44 Oil pan equals new Waterer! I...

    How High off the Ground?

I've been studying your avatar. Is that Cap'n Kirk in some sort of rage against a Klingon bad guy or perhaps Kahn? Or maybe it's Yeoman Rand and she spilled hot Romulan Tea on him when she was bumped by Spock? Hahaha It's from Star trek 2 when Kirk screams KHAN!!!

    How High off the Ground?

I'm illegal here so I kept it under the top of the fence and behind a neighbors shed so it can't be seen unless you really look for it.

    How High off the Ground?

Just did a search and it looks like the average height of a standard size chicken is 10"-18"

    How High off the Ground?

You may still have to clip wings even with a 6' fence, I didn't think I would have to till one day I went outside and noticed one of my hens in the other yard

    How High off the Ground?

I used two 8" concrete blocks to raise my coop giving them 16" of space. They free range all day and when it gets too hot they will go under there for shade. To exit the coop they go down a ramp underneath then through a small gate (I have a run to the side of the coop which wasn't put in yet...

Okies in the BYC The Original

Hey Okies! I live in Yukon and was wondering if anyone new of any good feed stores around here for chicken food, I've been going to Tractor Supply in Mustang but figured the feed store route may be a better way to go. Thanks!
