I can check into it. I checked on her yesterday evening and it seems that the swelling has gone down some. She still seems to be doing well otherwise. Thanks for the input.
Thanks a lot. I will. He seems to be doing fine otherwise. He gets up and hobbles around every once in a while and is eating and drinking well. I'm hoping it's just a minor issue. He lets me do pretty much what I want as long as he gets some treats in the process.
Hi all,
I don't write much on here as you can tell but I read the comments and discussions almost every day.
I have a 4 year old emu that I discovered yesterday has an injury of some kind to it's foot. She won't put much weight on it at all and has been laying around a lot. I've been...
I have a pair of emus that turn 3 years old in Feb. This is the first year that they've laid eggs. I don't have an incubator that's big enough right now so I was going to let them hatch them out themselves. So far they have laid 12 eggs. I was wondering if someone knew how many they might...
I ordered 20 RIR pullets from IDEAL back in October 2011. They arrived very quickly and all of them were very lively and doing well. They are beautiful chickens now. I ended up with 17 pullets and 3 roosters. They said to allow 10% error so I figured that wasn't too bad. I didn't mind...
Just like people their tastes are different. You just have to try different things and see what they like. Mine like bread and different kinds of fruit. Especially strawberries. I was feeding some sliced ham to my dog one day and of course the emus were crowding around thinking they were...
Welcome to BYC! I have four emus who are about a year old now. When I first got mine they were a couple of days old. I also kept them in a stall in my barn. They did fine in there for a little while but they definitely need room to run around. They have to have a lot of exercise for their...
I never let my guinea hens raise their young. They are terrible mothers. They tend to drag the babies all over the place especially in the morning when the grass is wet from the dew. Once the babies get wet they usually don't last too long. Every now and then they'll show up with some babies...
I think it depends on a few different factors. The type of chicken that is freeranging with the guineas is one. If the chicken is a larger breed then it's going to have trouble avoiding the guineas since they are smaller and much faster. I have 15 guineas that freerange with my 30 something...
I haven't seen any hawks get my guineas but since they roost in the trees at night I lose a few to owls, especially in the winter when there aren't as many leaves to hide them. I raised them inside and tried to get them to roost there but they prefer the trees.
I have 3 males and 3 females in one enclosure and they get along just fine. It helps a lot that they were raised together and are used to each other. If you tried to introduce older birds to each other that could be a different story.
I have 4 that are almost 1 year old and I feed them 2 large coffee cans per day. I'm not sure how much it is by weight but it is all they will eat. They also have 1&1/2 acres to roam around and forage on.
I've been checking out the BYC website for a couple months now and have really enjoyed reading about other's experiences as well as the excellent information offered. I finally decided to join so I can participate in discussions and provide any useful information I might have. I've been rasing...
