emu eggs

I have a pair of emus that turn 3 years old in Feb. This is the first year that they've laid eggs. I don't have an incubator that's big enough right now so I was going to let them hatch them out themselves. So far they have laid 12 eggs. I was wondering if someone knew how many they might lay their first year. Also, if they lay one every other or third day won't the first egg be over a month old? Will it still be viable? They seem to know what they are doing. They cover the eggs with grass as soon as they lay the egg. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

we had a two year old female start laying last year and she laid 36 eggs. Sounds like your birds have the situation well in hand, assuming that the male will be a good father, just sit back and let nature take its course and keep your fingers crossed...

we collect the eggs, hatching some in the incubator and shipping the others to buyers...

I'm getting 2 emu eggs from the emu farm across the road--- what incubators are you emu raisers using? I have a couple of hovabators and also an Eco20

My male will sit on between 11-14 eggs. During the time before, I gather up any eggs I find and put them in a straw nest, I also keep a heat lamp far enough away just to keep above freezing if temps get down. Once he decides the nest has enough and lays on it the female will stop laying, even if she lays a few after that they typically aren't fertile. This has been my experience anyway.

Most incubater are suitable, as long as there is at least 2-3" headroom above eggs and good air circulation spreading the heat evenly.

I'm just going to start too, when I get 4 of same age not older then about 7-8 days....then can add another 4 to fill my incubator...will then sell the rest of eggs ...or blow them lol

Hello I was curious if anyone could tell me how many females and males I should get if I'm getting 10 emus what number of males should I get and what number of females should I get if I plan on hatching a lot of the eggs and want to get as many eggs possible but yet have enough males to make sure the eggs will be fertile. 5 and 5 would be the magical number, just remember that they can turn violent, even lethal to each other during the pre-mating season and it is best to separate them into pens of pairs

Now my last question for now is how large do the pens have to be during mating season do they have to all be 100x25 or can they be smaller during matting season. An actual or close to dimensions would be great thank you so much
