Egg Consumption -- A couple of health and safety questions! :)

Hello, I apologize for asking questions that have probably been asked many times before, but I appreciate any help and advice you can give me. First off, I have a small, backyard flock of Plymouth Barred Rocks who are about 1.5 years old. They are currently housed in a shaded, elevated...

Do Quail or Chickens have a better feed to meat ratio?

Hello, I have read that quail have a better feed to meat value than chickens, but I would like to know if the Backyard Chickens community agrees with this before I get too invested in additional birds. I already have Texas A&M White quail and I'm trying to decide whether to increase this flock...

    Practical Uses for Button Quail?

Quote: That's a really good idea. I never thought of that! I have a ball python and for a rat it takes 21-23 days for the pregnancy. Then the rats aren't even weaned until they are 4-5 weeks. To get a rat to the size of a button it would take about 6 months or more. So using them as reptile...

I'm switching over to coturnix, so offered are all of my button quail for $65. This is approximately 30 birds, but I'm happy to include any extras such as chicks, hatching eggs, etc if I happen to have any at time of pickup. No cages, so please come prepared. None of the birds are tame to...

Anybody ever feed Kent "Wildlife Feeds"?

OK, I’m finally sitting down to catch up on all of the helpful posts that many of you have kindly taken the time to write! I'll put my own words in bold to help differentiate. JJMR794 wrote… There Are Many Reasons For Misguided Advice From Feed Stores--- Most Are Honest Mistakes. If He...

Help needed. My Quail are dying.

One of the quails is running around backwards knocking the other chicks over I had a chick do this a couple of times in the past. They were unable to pass a stool and kept running in reverse, flipping around and peeping. When I would hold the chick and gently massage its abdomen, it would...

What would happen if I left Coturnix with Buttons?

I've only tried this once, but I raised 7 button quail with 6 Texas A&M coturnix without any problems. They stayed together until all were fully feathered and nearly full-sized. Just to see what would happen, I later put these large coturnix quail in with a new hatch of button quail. They...

Anybody ever feed Kent "Wildlife Feeds"?

Thanks everyone. Just wanted to let you know that I've been reading the posts--but I haven't had a chance yet to sit down and compose replies!

OK, it's official, Coturnix ARE as tame, at least, as chickens!

Honestly, I think if someone were to follow this discussion board for long enough, they would have more vicarious experience than many breeders. This discussion board is far more useful and informative than any print books if you know how to learn selectively, taking each poster's context...

What kind of incubator is best for a small batch of quail?

If you want to pay around $40 to $50 and have a 25% hatch rate, I use the Little Giant still air incubator sold by Tractor Supply Company. It's cheap!

Anybody ever feed Kent "Wildlife Feeds"?

Thanks for the info. I couldn't find a tag sewn into the seam, though I know what you are referring to. Maybe it fell off along the way; I'll be sure to check whether the other bags have this sort of labeling next time I drop in. I could see from their website that Kent does make domestic...

Anybody ever feed Kent "Wildlife Feeds"?

By the way, the feed I first tried was 24% Manna Pro Gamebird feed, with the excellent labeling and hearty price tag. The chicks did well on it, but the higher protein content of the Kent mystery chow definitely "grows" them faster.

    button quails and sexing

They're just so darn aggressive! Usually, 1 male and one female will be OK. But, I have a hen who compulsively cannibalized every mate I introduced to her until I tried putting her in a colony (1 male and 3 females). Now, she's sweet and docile. I have a male who will brutalize hens he's not...

Anybody ever feed Kent "Wildlife Feeds"?

They are, but this is the 5th hatch I've had and the first time I've seen the anomaly. The first chicks I hatched were on a different gamebird starter with a lower protein content. The only difference I noticed when I switched to the Kent feed was that the chicks grew their feathers in much...

Help needed. My Quail are dying.

I've only been raising quail for a few months, but I have a theory that the longer a chick remains in the egg, the more bone and joint problems it will have. Could this be why your late hatch resulted in straddle legs and poor constitution, I wonder? So far in my experience, the chicks that...
