    A Bielefelder Thread !

This is my biefielder roo. He was sold to me as a pullet, but clearly that was a mistake. Turned out to be a very happy accident. I didn't want a roo, but I love him. He's so sweet and great with his girls. I'm excited to see what his chicks will look like. My hens are Australorp, welsummer...

    Marans Chick With Fused Toes

I have a Marans chick that hatched yesterday. 2 of her toes are fused together. I've read that this is more common with feather legged chickens. She's a little wobbly, but she does walk and can get around the brooder. What's her prognosis if I don't do anything? I'm not 100% comfortable doing...

Topic of the Week - Incubating eggs

I have an inexpensive Janoel 12 incubator that I got on Ebay. So far it's worked really well. I don't measure the humidity, but I am able to set the temp. My first hatch was about a month ago and I had a lot working against me. My eggs were from Meyer and from what I've heard, shipped eggs...

    Olive Egger vs Copper Maran

I just started incubating 8 eggs. They're all dark brown. The woman I got them from had 2 roosters. She said the chicks would either be pure Copper Maran or Olive Eggers. Any way I can tell which is which once they hatch?

    Meyer hatching eggs for sale

I purchased 8 of this assortment and 7 hatched!! I have 4 in the brooder and 3 still drying in the incubator. So far I've identified: barred rock, blue Andalusian, Easter egger, Australorp, buff Orpington and Rhode Island Red. Not 100% sure just guessing on some of the breeds.

    people with house chickens

I have an 11 week old EE that has an injured leg. She's on pain meds and antibiotics for the next week, so I set her up in a dog crate inside. This is a chicken who has never been inside and has never had much interaction with people. I was amazed, within 1 hour of being indoors, she was...

    BO or NH Red?

I ordered both breeds and I thought this was one of the buffs, but now that he's feathering out, I'm not sure. Is he too dark to be the buff? Also his legs seem more yellow than white. Not sure what breed of chick this is. He came from Privett Hatchery.

    California Greys???

I've got 10 California Grey chicks arriving from Privett's in May. I'm very excited. My birds free range so I don't want white chickens. I need chickens that have some camouflage. I'm looking forward to adding some white eggs to my egg basket.

    The Sussex thread!

I love my Speckled Sussex. She is one of my newest hens, but she's become my favorite. She is so gentle. I love how curious she is. She's just a really fun bird.

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I love my Welsummer. She's around 19 weeks. I'm hoping she'll start laying soon. I can't wait to see those eggs. She's super friendly and curious and she's a great forager.

Broody Hen vs First Time Layer

Picked up a dog crate today. Broody/bully hen is moving out. If she sits on and hatches any eggs, I figure the crate will be a good way to keep her and the chicks separate until they're old enough to integrate into the flock.

Broody Hen vs First Time Layer

I got my first flock of chickens around 6 months ago. The hens are older (around 3 years). To supplement my older hens, I recently introduced some younger pullets. With the exception of some minor bullying, everyone gets along. One of my Welsummer pullets is looking like she may be ready to lay...

    Composted Pine Needles

I'm new to chickens. I adopted an older flock this past fall. We live in a rural area, densely populated with pine trees. We have a huge pile of pine needles that has been growing for years. This is where all the needles carpeting the lawn end up. Coincidentally, next to this pile is where we...
