I have the same PVC setup, with mash, and the hens are making a mess. It looks like they are picking for their favorite morsels. There's a side swipe motion with their heads. Lots of waste, even with them eating off the ground.
Do you think going back to pellets would help?

After posting, one of the nesting boxes showed some activity but no laying. I'll give it time.
Sorry for the confusion, they have never used the nest boxes. The picture of the nest was on the floor in a different spot. Since posting this morning, they have already started making another floor nest, more like the original.
Prior to curtains, they used to roost in the upper level boxes...

Neither chicken looks like a rooster. The barred rock kinda have that rooster quality to a new chicken parent (completely speaking from experience). I just got one myself and yours looks just like my hen.
