In case anyone finds their way to this thread and is worrying that something is terribly wrong with their chicken, I thought I would post a follow up. This may not always be the case, but our chicken that was making a noise just like the one in the video turned out just fine. I'm guessing it...
Did you ever figure out what the issue was? I came on here tonight to look up the exact same thing. Thanks so much for posting the video...nothing like trying to "describe" a chicken noise on google! I've got my fingers crossed that things turned out ok. Our older (probably 2-3 year old) hen...

Same here...
We are in Las Vegas and a few weeks ago our temps hit 115-120! Luckily our humidity levels are considered quite low (8-20%). I'm not sure if these tips would work in a more humid climate, but after we started with this set-up our chickens weren't even panting anymore...
MuckMuck: did that include the one with the potential vent prolapse? If so, congrats! It really was stressful to hatch an egg. Of course, like all babies they sure are sweet when they are new. Our theory around here is that babies of all species are cute otherwise you'd want to kill them...
I applaud your ability to just go off and let nature do her thing. When we hatched our first chick (a month or so ago) we were completely psychotic! Never again!! I hope IF we ever do it again that I will have learned enough about patience to be able to just leave them be. Maybe we should...
It's pretty somber here tonight. We lost Meg yesterday, and now Lizzie! I was just out loving her an hour before, but when hubby came home he discovered her in the garden. I think she was my favorite...our very first chick. We still have no idea what was wrong with either of them. The...
Interesting to hear that this is happening to someone else. I have a hen that had a little black dot on her ear area for about 2 weeks and now I'm seeing a large scabby area on the top of her head. I haven't seen too much in the way of bullying from the others, but she's keeping to herself...
Ok, here's another question for our Vegas peeps...
One of our chickens has been sick for some time now. We've done EVERYTHING, but she looks like she is on her way out. However, at around the same time (maybe a week later) another one started having facial swelling. We assumed it must be...
We have a silkie chick (4-5 wks old) and while we know she's probably not ready to be re-located outside just yet, we were wondering if any other Vegans have any experience with Silkies outdoors in our climate. Since she hatched she seems to run warm...panting 3 days after hatch in a 95 degree...
We also have a Serta icomfort. We got it about a year ago. My husband does some work in the furniture industry so it was a great price and our Sleep number had been having issues with the pump (and making his back hurt!). We did a lot of research and the great thing is that it has a 25 year...
Speaking of excess kale...my sister just made "kale chips" and I thought they were quite tasty. She cut it up put some olive oil and salt on it and baked it until they were dry and crunchy. You don't want to burn them though (yuck!). Snacks like a chip! I thought, "Man, what a healthy, cheap...
Thanks for the pics Chickee! There's nothing like looking at cute little babies to cheer you up. What a wonderful hatch...10 of 11...that must be a record! We just had 1 out of 7 and thought it was pretty ok. I love all the support around here. Makes me feel all toasty inside.
Totally agree here! It's difficult to explain these things to kids isn't it. Hubby and I always say the best times of our lives were when we were poor and just starting out. It's all hindsight though... Hopefully in 10 years + these times will be added to those. And it IS very satisfying to...
Hmmm...those were VERY nice. Now I'm wondering if mine will pass muster. I hope I'm able to figure out how to post them here. Is there somewhere else that we will need to send them?
