    Bentonite and Zeolite Litter

Yes, it would just be used on the poop board. Rest of one would be shavings like normal! Yes, they both have different jobs. With the litter having both I’m hopeful it would be great on a poop board to hold and dry droppings :)

    Bentonite and Zeolite Litter

To start, I’m located in Canada where getting PDZ is basically impossible. Very sadly. I am slowly renovating a coop and want to put up poop boards under the birds roosts, everyone suggests PDZ (Zeolite) as it seems to be perfect for that purpose. I am hoping I may have found an alternative. A...

    Waiting on test results…

Yes. All of them. 😭 When the original group tested positive, we tested all of the other pens to see if it had spread (original group is far away from main group), but the main group all tested positive. We probably unknowingly spread it to the main coop while doing chores these past months….

    Quarantine and disease testing

You can do PCR tests using throat swabs, thank goodness for technology!

    Quarantine and disease testing

Good morning everyone! I have recently acquired several juvenile birds (4 months old ish) after a disease wiping out my flock. It’s very important to me to do things properly including biosecurity! These birds are in a sterilized chicken tractor, seem to be healthy so far, but have only been...

    Waiting on test results…

Results came in last week, as feared, all groups were positive. After we culled the birds (thank god hubby was there for emotional support, and to catch chickens) it felt quiet and lonely on the farm, I caught myself wandering into the coop area to just hang out with the birds in the morning...

    Waiting on test results…

They were brought in as day old chicks, scattered in three batches as the breeders were only able to hatch so many at a time. No new birds since them, some of the main flock went to a show recently but none from this pen. Moving forward I’ll be more cautious and have a separate area for the...

    Waiting on test results…

Yes I contacted them today. Apparently no sick birds on their ends.

    Waiting on test results…

Not an emergency or questions, just a statement and hopefully commiseration from fellow chicken owners. Several years ago we moved to a farm and I was finally able to expand my few backyard birds to raising and breeding rare and unusual breeds of birds. Poultry has been an absolute passion of...

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

This thread is an absolute treasure trove of knowledge, thank you everyone who contributed! I have a question I am hoping someone is able to help me with. A couple years ago I obtained BCM chicks from a well known breeder in my area. I tried my best to select the pullets and cockerels that...

Thank you! I will try and figure out how to set up single pens for the boys.

    Pens and show prep

Hey everyone! I’ve been a poultry lover since I was a kid, but only got into poultry shows recently. As the breeding season finishes and I have my grow outs for this year, I am separating my breeding groups back into hen only pens and a bachelor coop for the roosters. However, the boys are...

    BCM x Wheaten Genetics

Thanks in advance for everyone’s input! I have a BCM pullet that has brown tipped feathers, which I have now learned is mossiness! I’ve read that they have a recessive Wheaten gene. Wheaten Marans are uncommon in my country, but I happen to have sourced a Wheaten Marans rooster. If I was to...

    Wheaten Roo or Pullet

Well this is a first. I’m actually crossing my fingers this chick is a rooster! 😂 I know he is a little young to be certain, but I thought I’d get people’s opinions. First is the chicks feathers, the second is a pullet’s feathers when she was around the same age.

    Lemon Pyle Brahma SOP?

It takes quite a few years to get a new variety (colour) into the Book, but I was hopeful a group was working on it! I’ll have to take some photos later today, they’re beautiful “lemon-y” coloured, my one pullet laid her first egg today! They do have a bit of grey/darker colour on a few neck...
