We have two Plymouth Rocks. I wish I had gotten more. They are just past the 'teen' age, and are both friendly, sweet hens ~ and of course quite attractive. I would highly recommend them! This one was trying hard to figure out what in the world I was up to and why that thing in my hand kept...
I have one that looks just like this. Probably about the same age as in your pic, too. The bin I got it from was for Easter Eggers. Only two of my 'Easter Eggers' were the lighter ones (I chose them hoping they would be the white ones), but as they are growing only one of the two has the 'tufts'...
Thank you so much, Munsell's Poultry Processing... I will keep you in mind for future need! I need to be more prepared the next time (in the fall). We hope to not need any further 'processing' until then. Unfortunately we were in an immediate need/pinch. We cannot have roosters, and we had two...
Thanks! I am in NE Grand Rapids. We only have two to 'process' right now, so driving very far is not practical. In the fall we will want to process about 4-5, so that may make more sense then. I think that my husband and boys are going to do it this afternoon or evening, since we did not come up...
Did you ever have any luck with the processor hunt? I'm with you all the way on your description of where you are at and I cannot find anyone that knows who to ask! My son and husband tackled the job on the first three we had to do out of necessity, but they are avoiding now that we have two...
Where can you go to get a couple of chickens slaughtered/processed... whatever you call it, in Grand Rapids, MI??? I can't find anyone, and I even spoke to a butcher here and a turkey butchering company here and they have no resources to share/recommend. Thanks so much!!
Hmmm... good to know. Thank you! I may check into that hatchery, since we are in Grand Rapids. Maybe the males we had were Isa Browns, since the two of them turned white, but we traded them to a farmer months ago since we could not keep a rooster! Guess the joke's on me, huh? I will look up that...
The brown one in the center of the photos is the one I am talking about (All three are the same chix; the ones in the background are Easter-Eggers). The other medium brown that I have that is supposed to be an Isa Brown also has similar coloring, but she is smaller and has a small comb and...

Hmmm... well no neighbors have complained yet with all the noisy egg-songs, but this coc-a-doodle-dooing is getting out of hand. Don't want to press my luck, as I do have some grumpy neighbors, but mostly nice. Here are a few pics...
.
I bought the chicks at a farm supply store.
My Isa Brown 'hen' is crowing... a LOT. How can I tell if she is really a he, as this behavior is not very useful in keeping our clandestine chickens, well, clandestine. The males were white, and we traded them for hens, so I thought we were all set. Then four of the five brown 'hens' got bigger...
Your post reminds me of something... I was at the grocery store recently when I heard a little boy exclaim to his his mom "Look, mama, chocolate eggs!!!"
Hahaha... made my day!
