8 week old light Brahmas, any gender opinions yet? First are a few random pics, then a series of pics for 2 different birds. Here's one bird: Here's another bird. I have 6, but after getting these two, I didn't know who I'd caught and who I didn't!

Thank you Wishing4Wings! I will get better pictures when they are older, about how old do the Brahmas need to be?

MAMA Heating Pad....I'm getting cold feet!

This is my first time raising chicks. Picked up 33 day olds and put them in 2 groups in the barn coop, each group with their own MHP. Temps overnight and next day were low 30's. Next day, I decided it was too cold for ME! So I moved them in house so I could hang out with them. Added 11 more...

Looking for Your Stories: Pets vs Meat

Everyone asks me if we eat our chickens. No, ours are pets, and store chicken is still cheap enough to not warrant all the hassle of butchering. I process a lot of deer that friends kill. I keep thinking about raising goats and sheep for meat, since they should be about as easy to process (vs a...

    Black Copper Marans chicks' wings--different?

Thanks Spartan. I think they look like little penguins. Anxious to see how things unfold! They are just hatchery Marans, but cute little buggers!

    Diary of a Chicken Tender...

April 8. Lazy, fun day today. The Cuckoo Marans/ EEs group loves to hang out on top of their MHP. The light Brahmas/ Sussex / Welsummers group loves their nipple waterer and running around! The BCM / newest group still hangs out under MHP mostly. The wings of the BCM actually stick out from...

    Black Copper Marans chicks' wings--different?

I noticed the wings on my few days old BCM chicks stick out from their bodies. All 5 of them look like this. None of the other 37 chicks of 6 other breeds have wings that point out like this, including Cuckoo Marans. Is this common with BCM? It's cute, not a problem, but I'm curious!

    Hello from Michigan

Welcome! We contemplated getting chickens for several years, then 2 years ago, our son asked to bring a couple home from his ag class hatch. And it began! Have 42 1st week chicks upstairs and 11 hens out in the coop. I have had chickens in the past, but never knew they could be so entertaining...

I can't believe we did this again! New Babies

Love your new babies! I am keeping a BYC diary of my chick raising experience, too--even if I'm the only one to read it, i have something to look back on if we do it again! Hope your little bsl pulls through!

    Diary of a Chicken Tender...

Lost the little chick. She was well on her way out the door last night and was gone this morning. I had to work 12 hours today, so I didn't get to spend much time with the chicks before they went to bed. My husband found a second chick dead this afternoon. From the same bin as the one we already...

    Diary of a Chicken Tender...

My little EE is not doing well. And I don't think she's an EE, she has feathers on her feet! Got some nutri drench down her, but not much. Is there a best way to do this? I have been searching forums for feeding sick chicks but no luck yet.
