I did it!!! It took me a couple of months. But I did it! 90 % of the work was done by myself (my DH helped some...gotta give credit where credit is due! And he would be upset if I took all the credit). I am very proud of how they are turning out.
We did not have the money to buy a coop and...
From one newbie to the next....Thanks for the info! I know that the chicken wire is not as safe. But it is the only thing I have access too...FREE. And the tractor will be in back yard that is fenced (6ft. privacy fence) with our "guard" dog! Hopefully that will keep most predators at bay...
I like your tractor! Did you get the plans from somewhere or did you create it yourselves? I am getting approx. 25 meaties in a week and need to make a tractor or two for them. I have lots of pallets and chicken wire to do it with but need ideas, how to's. How do you have the "living...

I also had a hawks attack my flock yesterday. Mortally wounded one which I had to put down. And injured 2 others.
From what I have researched today, they say that keeping them in a secured run is best but that to me defeats the purpose of having chickens. The only other thing they say to...

Welcome!!!
I have been raising chickens now for almost a year and enjoy it greatly. And this has been my go to site for all info needed. Very helpful.
Ditto on all the other comments. I have just one to add.
When planning your coop, make it bigger than you need right now. I started off...
We used an old cabinet that had 2 shelves. And put cat litter boxes in them.
We butted the cabinet up against the coop and cut holes out in the back of the cabinet for the chickens to get into the nestbox.
We don't have to go in coop...... all we have to do is open the cabinet doors to...
One thing that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is the cost of raising chickens from babies vs. raising from pullets. Raising from babies is more expensive. You have the added cost of heat lamp and the 5 months of feed before you get your first egg. (But I think the cost is definitely...
Here is a pic of chicks. The white one is mine (5 week, Leghorn/EE mix) and the other 3 are BR.
Why is one growing just fine while other 2 don't seem to be growing at all?
I had only one chick hatch on Dec. 23rd. So one week later (Dec. 30th), I bought 3 more to keep her company. Don't know the exact age of chicks because breeder had several different ages in the same box. But they are a least, 4 to 6 weeks old.
My chick and one of the ones I bought are almost...
I have both Layena pellets for mom and start & grow crumbles for chick available in kennel for them along with fresh water. I tried taking momma outside for a little bit to let her spread her wings and dust bathe if she wanted but she freaked out even more. Don't have a light on them since...
My hen went broody for the first time at the beginning of Dec. and thought I would try to hatch some chicks naturally in spite of the cold. Only one chick hatched right before Christmas (LAST WED.). Mamma hen has been fine with baby chick. We have them in a Large dog crate inside the house...
I am a stay at home mom of 4 kids (ages 2 to 11). My new favorite past time is learning and making plans to become more self-sufficient and grow more of our own food. Got chickens down and are loving it!!! (adding more chicks this spring) Next on the list is a bigger garden, Bees (honey) and...
