Manuka Honey or Medihoney for bumble foot?

I have a hen with bumble foot, I was able to get the scab and first core out but not the second by soaking in epsom salt water to soften and pulled it out. I have been treating with drawing salve and soaking for about a week. The redness has gone away and some of the swelling. She does not...

    New Country Organics Layer feed

Thanks Redhead Rae. That is something I might try. They have oyster shell available all the time anyway so that will not be problem.

    New Country Organics Layer feed

I switched to whole grain because them seem to waste so much of the crumble and they really do not like pellets. I agree about them missing some of the protein. I have some mung beans sprouting to give them. I looked into mixing my own, but way out of my price range and expertise.

    New Country Organics Layer feed

The last 2 bags of New Country Organics layer feed has been different. Pale and seems like it has more powder or empty shells of the grain. I called the company and gave them the Lot #. I was told that it was fresh and the reason for the paler color was that they had used gold split peas...

Crop impaction and open mouth breathing

Thank you for the reply Out of the Brooder. Any suggestions are welcomed. It is just breathing, not gasping and it is not every breath. The doctor checked for gape worm. The poop sample was not the best due to the oil we have been giving to try and clear the crop. He did not see any, but he...

Crop impaction and open mouth breathing

Thanks Chicken Obsessed, I am not really good on the computer or these forums but I will try and take a video of her. Maybe it will help seeing what she is doing rather than just reading. The doctor did look in her mouth. She is eating and drinking fine.

Crop impaction and open mouth breathing

Hello, Sunday a week ago I saw one of my 18 week old speckled Sussex girls doing what I thought at the time panting. I thought she was hot so I turned on the fan. A little later when she was doing the same I checked her and found she had a crop impaction. I did lots of reading and followed...

Integrating a cockerel into a flock of mature hens

I agree about the males. I have worked rehabbing wildlife, (raccoons, opossums and squirrels) and found the males much friendlier and loving. I think the pms makes the females unpredictable.

What is the best bedding for coops?

I am with Gonehencrazy. I love the concept of the deep litter method. But, I just don't really understand how to get it started. Is there a better time of year to start (winter/summer)? We have 4 adult hens and 11 young ones to be added soon. In the process of building new coop 8x8. I plan...

What is the best bedding for coops?

Some mentioned the use of vanilla car freshener. The use of fresheners concern me as they are man made fragrances that can be toxic. I do use essential oils as they are natural. I make my laundry soap and softeners using essential oils as well.
