Hi,
I've had chickens in the past and want to get some more. I'd prefer to get chicks so I can train them a bit with hand feeding/handling. However looking for advice. It's already Oct here in NH and will winter in no time.
Is it too late for me to start them since it will be pretty cold...
Just an update: She was still in the nest box. I gave her the spa treatment - 20 mins in an epsom salt bath, gentle massage. I got her to nibble a bit on some baby food/water/tums mixture. Not much but hoping she ingested enough. Plus 2 bits of cold watermelon. She did have some gas then...
She is refusing to drink. I've offered it and tried to use a dropper to force it. It's been 2 hours since the bath and she's still sitting in the nest box with no success.
Thank you. I might feel an egg in her abdomen. I gave her a 15 min warm bath and put some Vaseline on/in the vent. She won't take any water from me. I've put her back in the nest box (where she stayed most of the day) and I'll check on her again and repeat the bath. I feel a bit helpless!
I'm hoping someone has some suggestions. My 3 yo americana hen is pushing like trying to poop or maybe lay an egg with no results. There was some mucusy poop with a bit of red in it which I've cleaned up. When she pushes the vent shows as raw/red/irritated on one side. Her general demeanor is...
About 45 days ago, my top chicken (pecking order wise) was lost to a predator while the flock of 4 was out grazing. The other 3 hens scattered. We found one on the pool fence and had to coax her down. The hen I lost actually hatched 2 of the other hens and ruled the roost. Since then, my...
Morning all,
I'm new to Silkie love and have three 6 week old babi
es. I think one is a rooster. I'd love your expert opinions. What do you think? One pic is all three. Two have fuller crowns while one has a more upright crown and seems to the one that starts peeping whenever I pick up...
Thank you everyone. Such great information. I'm pleased and relieved that what you've all described as normal behavior is exactly what I'm seeing. Ridgerunner, you perfectly described all the behaviors I'm seeing when he shows his dominance. I definitely am projecting human emotions! I think...
The Roo is almost a year old. He's not super aggressive. He had attempted to be aggressive a couple times but I went back at him and put him in his place. Now all he'll does is try to peck my boots. Who knows how he'd act with someone who didn't raise him though.
I'll give him a little bit...
The hen that died yesterday was the hen he picked on most. Her back on one side wasn't completely but quiet thin and bare in spots. She was the largest of my hens, the most independent (in fact she slept alone away from the others). The other hens - some run from him, some submit. One other...
Hello,
We have 5 hens and 1 roo (we started with 9 hens and lost 2 to predators and 2 died of unknown causes). He's so beautiful and is only mildly aggressive to me (pecks my boots if I pick up one of the hens) so we've kept him. But he does jump the poor hens constantly and now that we're...
I've been wondering that too, Suzie. I hope Blindside is doing well.
I've been watching the girls and Roo and everyone seems fine so whatever Rachael had was isolated. Thanks for everyone's support. The forums here have been so helpful.
Hi Gibsterl...I'm in Dunbarton. Moved here 6 years ago and talked about getting chickens for years. We finally pulled the trigger last year and ordered chicks from Ace in Goffstown. I think we got fairly lucky with only 1 turning out to be a rooster who is, so far, not aggressive toward me...
Good luck with your Roo, Suzie. I understand the not sleeping. I still look out at the coop anytime I get up at night to make sure they're safe.
Casportpony: I'm in NH. I'd be interested in the info for future reference. We did put Rachael in the freezer though.
Thanks very much for responding, Suzie. I've never treated them for worms. I got the chicks in May and now we're in pretty cold weather. I had planned to treat in the spring. I am using ACV in their water and D earth in their run, shavings but not their food. We change the roosting box...
