Thanks. Since I’m in city limits, of course roosters aren’t allowed. Otherwise I really do like the idea of growing them out. I will ask around at the horse barn where I ride and see if anyone might be able to take a cockerel if I end up with some.
I wouldn’t have a problem culling, but my son, even though he’s 13, probably would not like it. It would be tough, especially if it’s a chick that you raised. It sounds like you have an amazing menagerie! Luckily my city limits us to 6..otherwise I might end up with 23 too.

The Swedish flower hens are very high on my list. How chatty are they? It seems they are quite friendly overall. I was looking at greenfire farms as a source for them.
Thanks iluveggers. I had an order at Meyer ready to go, but didn’t place it. I’m also still waiting to hear from a MN breeder here on BYC. Right now I’m leaning towards Papa’s Poultry. He had a variety pack of auto sex chicks and mentions that sex link Orpington’s might be included.

Seriously at this point I’m like maybe we should just go to the farm supply store and pick up something cute. Ok not really. I’m way too much of a planner!
You’re absolutely right, so there’s always going to be the risk of re-homing or culling. My grandparents had a quail farm that I helped on as a kid, so I’ve seen my share of processing, etc. Culling Roos would absolutely be my last choice.
I live in Minnesota, so I need cold hardy. Planning on a woods style coop 6x10 with a 60 sq ft outdoor run. I’d love friendly, quiet(ish), hardy birds. I think Orpington’s look nice, I love the coloring choices of Wyandotte’s. Green/blue egg layers would be fun too. I would like decent layers...
I’m currently shopping for my first flock of chicks and it’s just overwhelming. I don’t really want to buy potentially below average stock from one of the big hatcheries that offer vent sexing. I’d love to support a local breeder, but they are hard to find and usually sell straight run.
I can...
They would fit if we faced it east. We have a south facing house/lot. I just think it looks so much better from that front elevation instead of sideways. I need to get out there and take some measurements too.
I do love the woods design. I just don’t think we will have the space for that depth in our backyard without cutting down trees and putting in a retaining wall into our back hill. I may have to go with a more traditional design.
Hello everyone, I’m new here. I’m starting up my first coop this spring in the Twin Cities suburbs. I was about to place a chick order with a big hatchery, but I much prefer to buy from a local breeder.
I’ve messaged a couple of people, but if there is anyone you would recommend, please let me...
