Black bumps covering my rooster's comb?

Any idea what these black bumps covering this RI Red rooster's comb is, that appeared a week or two ago? He is about 9 months old and a surplus bird separate from my flock that may be processed soon, but am wondering what this is? It doesn't have the white and black scabs like in the photos of...

    Do Roosters remain good for

I have a 1.5 yr old RI rooster and some buff and RI hens 1-2 yrs old and just successfully hatched a replacement layer flock for next year. The rooster is seems to have good qualities, not too aggressive. Should I keep this rooster and/or keep one roo from the new chicks once i can tell what...

    rotten egg ruining hatch?

Well, I lifted out the eggs, cleaned out the water tray and got rid of the dripped egg that was cooking down there, and that seemed to help a lot to get rid of the odor. I didn't try to clean the eggs; they were not directly dripped on anyway. we'll see soon what we get! Tom

    rotten egg ruining hatch?

I have the same question about bad eggs in the incubator. I removed one about day 7 and another one day 15 today; both were oozing out the bottom in my Genisis 1588 Hova-bator but did not explode. The incubator and the room its in really smells though. should I remove the eggs for a few...

Hatch chicks in August or wait to next spring?

Is it too late to start incubating and hatching some eggs in August here in Maine, so hopefully they are feathered out enough for winter weather, and will start laying early next spring? Else if I wait until next spring to raise chicks I won't have new layers for another year. Lost this past...

Help with mites, broody hens, dirty hatching eggs, bedding

Thanks for the quick reply. I've never seen them move off the nests since I'm gone all day long but I know they poop elsewhere in the coop once in a while. I have to keep the coop shut so the other hens won't bother the sitting ones. Today would be day 15 so if I can get away with changing...

Help with mites, broody hens, dirty hatching eggs, bedding

Two of my Buff Orpington hens got broody so I put half a dozen eggs under each and they've been sitting on them for two weeks, my first time at trying hatching at home. They have one small coop to themselves and the rest of my flock is in an adjacent paddock and coop. Just found yesterday the...

    Possum... Friend or Foe?

I found a possum tonight in a trap i set baited with tunafish. Could it be the culprit that killed one my Buff Orpington hens Friday night, when she decided to fly over the fence and roost just outside before I shut them up for the evening? What ever it was dragged the hen about 100' into the...

My neigbors Dachshunds killed 3 of my young chickens today

Sorry about your loss; I can relate. My neighbor's Dachshunds killed at least one, and possibly 2 more, of my chickens the past couple weeks, when I let them out to roam in my yard. Some of the other hens show physical signs of attack and/or behavior of hiding in fear. The animal control...

    Broody Hen behavior typical?

My flock of 7 RI Reds and Plymouth Rock hens is 15 months old and has been laying steady for 9 months. One of the RI Reds has been broody the past couple weeks, sitting almost all day on whatever eggs are laid that day in her nest. She doesn't fuss if I push her aside to collect eggs daily...
