Your above post is sooo helpful, @Ridgerunner; thank you!! I had a question about the last point—are you able to explain how the medicated feed and vaccinations can cancel each other out? I’ve heard this before but don’t understand the mechanics.
You are doing great! It’s totally normal to have questions even when you have done a lot of preparation! Even seasoned chicken raisers will still have questions that come up with new issues! :)
If the SLW and the giant chick are close to the same size, I would say that it’s not likely to be a...
Welcome to BYC, @Jld13!
It is possible you have a Cornish cross meat bird on your hands BUT I think the other possibility is that your other chick is just very small. How old is the black/white chick that you have? It seems to be about the same size as the chick in question.
Based on that...
Here is a helpful quote from @coach723 in another ongoing thread in the BYC forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/are-all-chicks-vaccinated.1462126/post-24351530
I'm not an expert on this by any means, but this is my current understanding:
Some prefer to use medicated feed and some prefer to use non-medicated, and you can raise happy, healthy chicks on either. Some (including myself) like the extra "insurance" that medicated feed can provide for young...
Welp...chicks are here :ya and I put them out in their prepared and preheated brooder after I brought them home from the post office, but it was quickly apparent that they were not warm enough. :hmm It was about 32 outside this morning and the pets’ water bowl on the deck had frozen over...
My chicks are here! Got a call from local post office at 6:18am that they were ready for me and they had me come pick up before window hours! Chicks home by 7:00am!
I don't use that brand, but I have Sav-A-Chick electrolyte and probiotics for the first few days. I'll have that in one waterer and plain water in the other.
My chicks are on their way to me in Minnesota from Ohio through MyPetChicken. They shipped yesterday and I have a tracking number, but the tracking is either not up-to-date or the chicks are still in Ohio. I do think that the tracking is not staying on pace with the package's actual progress, as...
Guys, my chicks are on their way! They flew the coop in Ohio yesterday morning! :celebrate
The brooder is ready and waiting for them (minus a few last things like plugging in a reading light and filling up the waterers):
Night-time temperatures for the next few days will be in the 30s to 40s...
I will add that it can be tricky with certain color patterns to get a good idea of what the final feathering will look like until they are several weeks older. So s/he may not look exactly the same later on.
:welcome
I agree that it does look rather striped—it looks barred but rather more diluted than your typical black/white barring. Could it be a sort of blue barring? I’m not very well-versed in the specifics of chicken colors and am not familiar with the British Araucana. Whatever it is, s/he is...
