Hi, All. I recently bought four shipped Silkies (not sure of the hatchery, though I can find out) a few days before hatching out two in the 'bator (was hoping for more, but...).
I know the chicks I bought were 24 hours old, and they far exceeded my hatched chicks in overall health and vigor...
Yes, I was thinking that the other kids must be making it pretty hard for him when I thought they you were talking about elementary school. But middle school? Now I really feel sorry for that poor student.
:o
ChicknLittle, Good LUCK with your leghorn hatch, and thanks for the support. I was using an LG for this batch as well. Since it's my first time, I have nothing to compare it to, but I have found that the temp. has stayed very consistent throughout the weeks.
Grillmaster, I was actually thinking...
...when I decided to incubate eggs for the first time how responsible I would feel when one or more of them died. This experience has been a great melting pot of every emotion imaginable, and now that I have lost one chick to weakness and another in the shell, I've had to accept that this...
Our spraddle-legged chick seems to be doing much better after only a day with the hobbles on, but I'm sorry to report we lost the little one with the curled toes. It was just too weak, and when we woke up this morning it had died.
Hugs to you. I am so sorry to hear this, and I went through almost the exact same thing today with a late hatching Silkie (day 24). Poor little chick seemed to be making (slow) progress zipping the shell, and I wish I had intervened because I found it dead in the shell this morning. It broke my...
Hippichick, I have the same problem with a day-old Silkie at the moment. I ended up splinting her with electrical tape (each individual toe - talk about micro surgery!). I first tried the spatula-looking bandaid trick, but she kept slipping around on those flippers, and I didn't want to add...
Tuffoldhen, thanks so much! Well, I went ahead and splinted the little toes with electrical tape and hobbled the the other chick with vet wrap, which I use for horses usually, but which is great for feathered Silkie legs since it doesn't have any adhesive (and yet sticks to itself beautifully)...
Thanks, Willsmama and Envirogirl! Yes, I've seen pictures of duct tape used as toe splints, but since these chicks are just going on a day old I wasn't sure if I should give those feet some time to uncurl.
Has anyone else dealt with these issues before?
Well, three of my six Silkie eggs (the ones left after the day 14 candling) finally hatched. It was a late hatch (day 23), and two of the chicks seem to have leg issues. One chick's toes are clenched/curled, and I'm wondering at what point I should address that.
Also, another chick has an issue...
Day 22, and we finally have one pip (out of six remaining Silkie eggs in the bator). It's my first pip, first potential hatch, and I'm SO excited - especially since my hygrometer turned out to be defective, and I've really worried about how this would affect the peeps.
Hi, Michele. I'm going through something similar with a one-week-old Silkie at this very moment as well. My chick did have pasty butt, and I didn't start seeing the pulsating bum (for lack of a better term) until after I'd soaked the blockage and removed it. The chick did have a couple massive...
Zuma, I am so, so sorry to hear of this loss. A predator got my two Mille de'fleur pullets early last summer, so I completely identify with that horrible, sick feeling. I also had to tell my children about it when they woke up - it was just devastating, as you've said. However, time will heal...
Thanks, Silkie! They seem to have calmed down a bit already, though I think I'm going to name this one Ivan the Terrible (even it he ends up being a she).
:-)
