    WV chickens in the news

Hey, I wonder why the local housing authority hasn't provided homes for these wayward chickens. Seems to me their rights are being violated. I think we should take up a collection and engage the services of an attorney to act as Official Chicken Advocate for these birds.

    WV chickens in the news

Did you notice under the story there is a section of Top Stories, and one of them is titled "Animal Control Officer Gets Infection From Weirton's Wild Chickens" I wonder how much Foley paid him to get sick? That's the problem with Media these days, they can't just report the news, they have...

Landowners....... how difficult is it to clear land for pasture?

I need to add something after reading the "carbon footprint" post. In the first place, these trees were planted by a tree farmer, the same as if you went out and planted corn or some other crop. Do not be shamed into thinking that you will contribute to global warming if you cut the danged...

Landowners....... how difficult is it to clear land for pasture?

Sell some or all of the trees off as pulp wood. Find a buyer who will cut it and haul it off. You should be able to make a little money and then buy a tractor and bush hog. You will also need to deal with the leftover stumps from the trees. You might rent a stump grinder (expensive) or drill...

    Determining Age of Adult Birds

Thanks! I enjoyed the "portraits" of your hens. It has been such a long time since I've been around chickens; I'm sure I'll be able to recall much more once I have mine and can spend time with them.

I miss all the old timers....

I'm very new to this forum and I am one of those who asks questions the answers to which must seem obvious to you now. I could read all the posts on the index and probably become an expert, but a person who has a new passion needs the interaction of other people who share that passion. You...

    Determining Age of Adult Birds

I had a much different experience some years ago. I bought about a dozen leghorns from an egg farm because they were "past their prime" and they started laying right away, gave me no trouble, and lived a long time. I had a big red rooster named Throckmorton that kept them on their toes LOL.

    Determining Age of Adult Birds

Is there a method of determining the age of adult chickens? How do you know if a bird is 2 or 5? I would like to buy adult birds, but don't want to be misled about the age.

One of those more dollar than sense coops.......Inside pictures added

It's not lame, it's unique. My only worry is that the outside run doesn't look very strong. I would worry about a coon or fox digging under or lifting up the wire. Coons have little front paws that look just like a human hand and they are very strong. Maybe something along the bottom to...

My DH's Attempt To Build MY "Dream Coop"

WOW! That is quite a work of art! Nice goin'. I have a question tho. On the part of the roof that overhangs the outside run, will you install rain gutter to keep the water from cascading down into the run? I can't tell if that's gonna be a problem or not from the photos. I really like your...

    A New Predator....PIGS!!!!

That's serves as a reminder for me. I recall having seen hogs devour an unsuspecting chicken that happened to get into their pen. It's an rarity, but when a hog (or hogs) get the bloodlust, they can be frightening. I would keep my chickens away from the brutes. And then again, you should see...
