My mother in law has buckets of pinto beans stored in her basement for food storage. She wants to get rid of them. Is there any way I can use these to feed my chickens? I can't cook them all, but I could certainly soak them. Has anyone ever tried simply soaking beans and giving them to...
I'm sick of paying through the nose for feed at IFA. I've seen people here locally in Utah posting on KSL 50lb feed bags for half what they charge at IFA. Any idea where I can buy large orders of bulk feed and simply sell what I don't need? I imagine Idaho must have a lot of grains that they...
Thanks barkerjw -- interesting info. So to identify a chicken that's "gone broody" (sounds like going awol - ha ha), it's simply a hen that sits in a nesting box most of the day and doesn't get out to mingle with the rest of the hens and scratch, walk around, etc.?
I ususally mix in at least two new ladies at a time with the flock -- the attention of the flock is sometimes diverted between the two instead of focusing on the sole new lady. I'll give them 2-3 days to look and peck at each other through a chicken wire fence. Assuming the new birds are...
From your experience, do you do anything differently when your hens are moulting in order to speed it up of help them through the moult? Any different diet, anything you add to their water? How long does the moult period usually last for your ladies?
With egg production so low this November...
My neighbor gave me a few 5-gallon buckets of wheat berries -- probably 20 years old. They've been stored in his cool, dry basement and seem completely fine. Can I feed straight wheat to my chickens, or will that upset their systems at all? Is there any protein in wheat like that -- can I...
I posted earlier this week that my White leghorn has stopped laying and someone suggested perhaps she was going through molt. She is just barely 1 year old and did not molt in the fall, so she's never molted. What is molt like -- does she lose a lot of feathers? How long does molt take, when...
I don't think she's molting -- how could I tell? I thought they only did that in the Fall? Like I said, she's just about a year old.
If she does have an egg stuck, how do I get it out?
I have 5 hens, 2 of which are White Leghorns. They are all 1 year old. All 5 have laid great last fall and through the winter. Then suddenly about a month ago one of my White Leghorns stopped laying. I get 4 eggs every day, but only one white egg. All 5 hens look clean, no dirty feathers or...
I sprayed 2-4-D-Amine (weed spray) around my yard last night for weeds. I had the chickens all locked up in their coop/run. My sprinklers went last night and I would think washed most of the 2-4-D-Amine off the grass.
I let the chickens out this morning and noticed later that one of my...
I have a Barred Plymouth Rock and a Red Sex Link that are both laying great eggs. I also have 2 silver laced Wyandottes -- all 4 were purchased the same time and have been fed the same. They're all about 22-23 weeks old. The eggs from the 2 Wyandottes just aren't good -- the shells are too...
