I checked up on him when locking up the other birds. His bad eye is somewhat open, a slight improvement. The white eye covering is partialy over the corner, and though the pupil/iris border is distinct, the pupil maintains a red blurriness and seemingly permanent dilation, so I doubt he will...
I looked closely at how he moves his beak. Any fractures are probably more or less limited to his left side, most likely lower part of the beak and farther back in what I had labelled as green. Hopefully he'll pull though.
He as been drinking, though probably not eating as much as he should...
The system that will probably prevail for the next month or two or three is that the injured rooster will stay in a rabbit hutch, the un-injured young rooster will roam free with his sister, and the 8 yr. old rooster will be with his big flock of hens.
This morning I fed him some scrambled eggs, and he has been kept locked up. He seems to be crowing more or less fine, and I couldn't see sign of fracture when he crowed. he still seems to be holding his beak more closed then often. Maybe if I'm lucky, the fracture may have been a figment of my...
Scrambled eggs will do. I have also heard that yogurt can promote digestive health, so perhaps I might add that in for him, and chicken feed turns soft with water, but will definitely not be as full of protein as the eggs. Are there any foods in particular that might speed healing in his facial...
This rooster's condition is one of a long series of bad-luck events in the past couple of weeks. I might be cursed.
First came the end-of-schoolyear projects, then the Lyme disease, followed swiftly by hand-foot-and-mouth, finals, and now a maimed chicken. The recent past has been unlucky to...
The problem is, both he and his brother are people chickens. They both love my company, they both act like puppies. And with the 'eye touch test', he keeps his right eye closed. He will not willingly open it.
Upon closer inspection, more serious issues have arisen. Once upon a time, I did have...
He's one of the dang nicest roosters I've ever had. Most roosters I can raise from day one turn out like puppies. He, just like his present brother and dead/given away brothers before him, he does not shy away from attention and would follow me around the yard. He submits easily to being picked...
No such experiment is possible. He seems to be keeping that eye shut, which could be a sign of future blindness.
Poor boy. I was hoping that I could find him another home and may have found a taker, but now, who wants a half-blind rooster?
I don't believe I have any silver (iodide?) handy, but I did drop in some sterile saline solution, and upon closer inspection, the eye could possibly have taken some internal damage. Is there anything else I can do?
One of my younger roosters just got into a fight with either his brother or his father. He doesn't seem to have injuries elsewhere, but his right eye seems to have redness in it. I can still see the outline of the pupil and iris and the eye does not seem to have any substantial damage to the...
It could easily be possible that he sprained something when landing.
Meanwhile, about 20 hours later, he is doing at least a little better. He seems to be trying to walk on his leg, which means progress, but also the pressure could delay healing. i tried feeling for any hot areas on his leg...
Last August, I hatched 3 chicks, and two grew up to be some of the friendliest roosters that I've ever had. Today, one of them inexplicably went lame. As I was getting ready to put his brother in for the evening, I noticed that he was limping to the point where he was hopping on his right leg...
