17 weeks?
Having experienced the rapid growth of my 2 RIR's that are 20 weeks old today, one turned out to be a roo, I'd say there's no doubt you have a Hen there. My roo developed roo tendencies at a week old. His comb developed very quickly compared the hen, too.
Just for grins and giggles, I thought I'd update this thread I started way back. Turned out it was indeed a Cockrell. I knew it all along but held out hope that I was wrong. We just can't do the Roo thing here in my backyard. He turned out to be a real good looking bird and was great with the 5...
Our 5 hen flock just hit 19 weeks old last Wednesday. It must have been all my threats to them that the BBQ was ready for them if someone didn't start producing! Reba, our RIR pulled it off! Last Monday, she left us a beauty and as of today, we've received 3 more.
First egg. It's the little...
Thanks!
We HAD Loretta....but she turned out to be Henry! He had to go, though. He was one of our 2 Rhode Island Reds in our 6 bird line up. We have too many nice neighbors, not to mention the coop is located not more than 15 feet from my bedroom window and Henry was just starting to learn...
It seems like an awful long 18 weeks but today at 3:15 this afternoon, I'm pretty sure it was one of my 2 Barred Rocks that left us a treat right next to the fake egg I placed in one of the 3 nesting boxes. Out of the 5 hens I have, the 2 Barred Rocks rushed back up the ladder and came into the...
Thanks! Glad you like my naked chicken.
We have a pretty hot pile going that's about 4 cubic yards in size. I figured the feathers would just break down but something made me want to ask to see if others had any advice or warnings about it.
While cleaning up all the FOD in my coop, I end up with all the beneficial manure as well as a fair amount of feathers that have been cast by our 6 birds. The materials are placed on a large compost pile that is cooking quite nicely. Just curious if anyone knows of issues with composting the...
I would love some tips on the best way to introduce a new hen to our young flock. We just came to realize that one of our beloved RIR hens, "Loretta", is actually a "Henry!" Even though he doesn't know the words yet, he's been practicing his cock-a-doodle-doos in the coop every morning and that...
Interesting. I may be battling the same thing. I built a coop and picked up our chicks for the brooder on May 2, just a little over 3 weeks ago. The day after Mother's Day I woke with hives all over my upper body. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what's causing them as nothing has really...
Loretta "Hen" is in the middle, Reba in the foreground. They're both 3 weeks old today. I'm seeing a striking difference in comb development with Loretta. The comb is larger and taking on some color. None of our others, 2 Bared Rocks, 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes, have such an advanced comb.
This...
It's official. As of late afternoon yesterday, 5/2, I kicked off my first go at a backyard chicken family. My wife and I have talked about doing it for some years now but in talking with our younger neighbors, they were also pretty gung-ho about doing it, as well. We decided to go joint venture...
