Hello everyone,

A friend of mine thinks he may be allergic to chickens. He recently (within the past couple weeks) brought home some chicks and subsequently had some asthma attacks, which to my knowledge isn't normal for him. He thinks he may be allergic because when he mentioned the attacks to his parents, they told him his grandmother was that way around chickens. I know that is an incomplete picture, so I am trying to get some additional information that might help him keep chickens and keep allergic reactions at bay, if possible.

Has anyone else dealt with allergies around chickens and have you found a way to reduce or eliminate the reactions? What have your experiments and successes looked like?

I suggested sand bedding rather than pine shavings or straw to keep down the dusty cellulose material + bird poop dust.

Anyway, thank you for any insight you can provide!

Interesting. I may be battling the same thing. I built a coop and picked up our chicks for the brooder on May 2, just a little over 3 weeks ago. The day after Mother's Day I woke with hives all over my upper body. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what's causing them as nothing has really changed in my diet, my lifestyle, etc. Aside from the chickens.

It didn't have any reactions for the first couple weeks of them being here and cleaning out their brooder box of the shavings. I have them in their elevated coop but sealed into the interior portion with the heat lamp. Without a doubt, they're kicking up way more dust now in that environment. The weird thing is this hives only seem to hit me while I'm sleeping and I wake up with them. I'm finishing an 8 day dose of Prednisone which helped but the hives are coming back. Back to the Doc today.

As an update, my wife and I brooded with sand and they still managed to kick up a ton of dust! I'm not sure if my friend had hives; what he described sounded more like respiratory irritation. What I didn't mention in my OP is that he was having asthmatic-like reactions.
