Did you ever find out what the issue was? And how did your rooster heal? I have the same issue, just on one foot. He wasn't limping, no dark spots, no other swelling... just his back toe. I cleaned it, put antibiotic gel on, and wrapped it. I did this 4 times over a week and no change.
