I need help identifying a disease is it poison or Mareks.

It seems to be a slow progressive disease. They start with the weak wings, then slowly get leg paralysis and die gasping. They eat fairly well for the first 3/4 of the disease. They seem to die one by one, I have never had more than one sick at a time. A male rooster died as well. Someone on...

I need help identifying a disease is it poison or Mareks.

I am worried about a wild Gallus gallus hen. She has started to be sick like at least 6 other hens and one rooster and it always ends the same. Dropped wings, twisting of neck, paralysis and eventually an inability to breathe. One dead chicken was taken to the vet for an autopsy, but she...

    Reconnecting after many years

I am an expat who first kept hens in Nigeria in the 70s. Now I live in the South Pacific and I started keeping hens again in 2008. My hens are varied in terms of whether they are "mine." I have wild Gallus gallus roaming in my garden and next door in the bush (undeveloped property), then I have...

Absolute minimum light requirements, for egg laying

I know this is a very old thread, but I live in the tropics and my hens give me an egg most days even though we have 12 hour days (approximately). I never thought that the 14 hours was a problem. Possibly my hens are used to the shorter days? However, in the past I did have a small light on near...

Mosquitoes are HORRIBLE--I have the solution!!

Although this thread is old, I feel I must agree with the last poster. For 5 months now I have been losing chickens to what I thought was Merkel's disease. However, the hens and one rooster seemed to get sick at different times, and usually when we have disease come through here it comes and is...

    Neighbor Poisoning Our Chickens?

My neighbour has sprayed around her house to kill cockroaches. She did not intentionally mean to do it, but I think my chickens are dying as a result. Possibly your neighbour has done the same?

    Rat Poison

If the rat poison is the blood thinning type then the chickens will take about 5 -14 days before they die. When my dogs or cat have eaten rat bait, my vet prescribes Vitamin K for helping the blood to clot. I have to keep on giving it for two weeks.

    rats as predators

I use rat poison, the blood thinning kind, I watch their routes that they follow to get into the chicken house and place a matchbox high up or in place inaccessible to the hens outside the coop. Then I rush out early in the morning to pick up any possible stray pellets that might have fallen...

    Cockroaches

My vet says that the cockroaches here in the South Pacific carry worms and that it can be the cause of eye worm. I would not let mine eat cockroaches. I am definitely sure that it is not good for them to eat poisoned cockroaches but I am going to ask about this in the forum. I think mine have...

Lame then gasping followed by death

Hi My free range chickens are being decimated by a disease that starts with a leg going lame, followed by a general malaise and an inability to walk, culminating in them not eating and gasping for air before they die. The disease is slow to spread as out of 60 free range hens only 4 have had...

    New member from South Pacific

Hi, I live on a tropical island and have two sets of hens. The one group are island mixed hens who are free range and who give me very few eggs. The other group are from New Zealand and are Hylines they give me an egg a day. I would love to hear from other people about their hens. I have...
