Local hatchery says never use brooder heat plate for new chicks?
I always use lamps but if using the big brooder in barn will add a plate for additional heat if it’s cold. Either way, just check regularly to see if chicks are huddled on top of each other (too cold) or spaced out. Just my experience- ZedR

Help with new 16 chicken flock
A weasel ripped through our last flocks defenses (dog kennel fencing covered by bird netting) and killed the entire 8 year old flock in one very sad night. Now building entirely new coop and run for 8 Easter eggers and 8 Cinnamons. Probably overthinking but planning on 8x10 coop with 8x10 run...- ZedR

8 healthy hens, but only 1 egg per day total?
I'll have one of my quail lay and egg without a shell every once in awhile. If it's not a regular thing it's nothing to worry about. But RobPS is right. Stress can cause it and so can lack of protein. I feed my girls 24% protein (Dumor Chick Feed) if that helps. -

Hey there everyone. May be a dumb question but does anyone use water nipples/cups for their chicks? I have 6 Rhode Island girls between 3 days old and a 1 week. Right now they drink from your standard bottle waterer in their brooder but they keep getting pine shavings in it. I guess that's not a...- ZedR

Yeah my girls vary too. I would recommend keeping a journal. I have 32... some boys... but I range from 18 - 28 a day. That's with a timed light supply! So I started keeping the journal and every day I record the date, how many eggs and the high and low temp. Like I said, my light supply doesn't... -
Spring 2017 first timers post!
Hello everyone! We raise Coturnix Quail but today picked up our very first chickens! 4 day old Rhode Island Reds. They are so sooo cute. They all seem to be eating and drinking. Kinda hang out in the brooder 1/2 way between the heat and the cooler side so I hope we're good. Hope to get better...- ZedR

Thx all. It appears as though the source of the problem is her leg. She can't seem to walk on it. She's eating but I think being gobbled she's losing feathers because she's kinda dragging herself in the straw. Not sure what to do :-( -
How to stop your quail from laying eggs?
I'll just add it you don't really need to worry about the temp with Coturnix. They are cold weather hearty so long as they are draft free and dry. They can easily go below 40 -

Prolapse Question
I'm feeding them Dumor Chick Feed 24% with about a cup of meal worms every night for the extra protein/fat (it's gets pretty cold). They have a constant supply of oyster shells provided through two feeders. -
