Anyone ever heard anything about adding flax oil to chicken food (layers or meat birds)? I googled it and only found info about flax seeds added, but not the oil. I have multiple extra bottles of the stuff that I'd like to (probably slowly) give to them.
I'd like to be using my knife less, especially for things like removing feet, neck, wingtips, etc. Can someone recommend a good pair of kitchen shears/scissors to me? Or another method that I don't know of? I feel like I'm dulling my knife every time I get at those bony spots. Thx!
We let ours out just towards the end of the day. If they're out more than about 4 hours, they start getting into mischief, as in hopping the fence and scratching around the neighbor's yards. We live on 2/3 of an acre, so a big enough yard to keep them occupied for those few hours. This way...
I am not surprised to hear this question, and OP, don't feel bad for asking. I have a local friend who asked me the same thing - she was just not thinking of chickens in terms of being a bird, as opposed to a mammal. She asked, "Wouldn't you only eat the hens since they'd have bigger breasts?"...
Ours free-range, but I should have added (which I think may be an important piece of info) is that our ducks and the RIR were in the same batch of chicks/ducklings that were introduced to the coop toge.ther, so the ducks may have thought they were chickens or visa versa
I haven't noticed any, but I also have only been giving it to them as a treat, and maybe every other day. If it was a more prominent part of their diet, I'd probably be more concerned :) I have one grocery store that will give me their old produce before tossing it, but mostly I have a few...
Sounds yummy jipus5! I just dumpster dived a couple cases of fresh mozzarella balls. Our hens are just too excited, while friends have commented that they are eating quite the gourmet treats these days :)
Pomegranite is a delicious fruit found in lots of grocery stores this time of year. It is an interesting fruit, in that you only eat the seeds - so juicy and yummy! I have never thought to give them to the chickens, what a great idea!
We had problems with a khaki campbell drake in with our hens. He would *not* stop mating with a RIR! The poor girl, she hated it! I had started out with 4 ducks, hawks brought us down to one of each sex. Once the drake starting mating with the RIR hen, there was no turning back for him. I...
I've got an EE as well that lays white eggs. in fact, at first she only laid rubber eggs, then progressed to white (I was just glad they had a shell!). She's a weirdo.
UGH! We just had our second loss to a hawk - this one took duckling behind a structure in the back of yard to feed to her two babies - DH caught them in the act :( Is there ever a safe age that my birds will be big enough - how big will my birds have to be before hawks stop attacking? I can...
What kind of floor does your garage have? I'm imagining it to be cement, which would mean there's no absorbtion layer at all, which would be pretty gross. We also use sand, but it's outside. Under the sand is gravel and under that is dirt.
