Shadrach,
I love this. Great article btw. So what is the difference between Pine Tar and Stockholm Hoof Tar? Some places use the term interchangeably. I'm going to give it a go, as I think keeping them quarantine is not doing them any good.
great suggestions. I took her back out, but I'm not sure if she'll make it. The other one is getting healthy. I'm gong to put her in the run in her own cage and see who comes knocking. any other suggestions would be welcome.
I am at my wits end. I've had chickens for 5+ years, and have never had an issue like i'm having now. I introduced 6 pullets to my established flock at the end of the spring. Things went as expected, and all was fine. We took a bunch out to show at the local 4H fair in September. The day...
just to update...after several weeks, it looks like things have settled down quite a bit. I added some branches to the extended run and that did the trick. the new brood used the branches as a hiding space, while they all figured out the pecking order. I think the key to this is giving the...
Thank you Ridgerunner. Great insight.
He has started working the flock for sure... to limited success, but he's working it.
I had a rooster with the older hens last year, so they have experienced what that means, and I'm noticing one of the older hens "Hanging Out", peacefully with the...
We had about a dozen this past winter, and things went well until something took out a bunch of the flock. During the winter I cover the the run you see in the picture so the snow won't pile up, and obviously the underside stays clear as well..
The coop is about 6 X4 with roosting poles...
Thank you aart.
I do free range them quite often, but your point is a good one so I decided to triple the size of the run. It should be complete this weekend.
I'm noticing things are progressing, but the pullers are still not coming down, so I'm hoping the larger space will give them some...
I know there is a TON of discussion on this, and I've read through them, but I'm having a problem that I'd like some guidance on. I've got 4 year + old laying hens in an existing coop. I've raised 8 chicks that are now 16 weeks old. When they were 12 weeks old, I put them in my coop and...
I have a 8-10 week old hen who started limping about a week ago. We kept an eye on her and I wanted to give her a rest, so I separated her from the other 11 chickens and rested her leg for about 4 days. I went to here today, as I wanted to re-introduce her and give her some exercise, and I...
Thank you fogandcopper,
Unfortunatly, we put her down yesteday, as she got so bad, she coudent get off her back, and I think she was starving herself. So painfull, but necessary to do.
I'm keeping an watch on the other ones right now, and hopefully we can keep them healhy.
Thank goodness...
Thanks realsis.
No blood test, so we are not positive, but things are looking more and more like it. I'm going to keep her on her own for a bit and see how she does. if she gets worse, then I'll do what's best for her.
Unfortunatly, it's take all of this for me to do my research on this...
Update and Question...
Being new, and having a vet close by, I took her to the Vet. My poor girl is wasting away (the vet showed me how to check by feeling the breast and leg areas), and she did a coccidiosis stool test.
The good news - they found coccidiosis, but the fact that I'm feeding...
I looked for swelling, but didn't see any.
I noticed that when we touch one leg, she is fine, and when we touch the other, she pulls back. I'm thinking (praying) she just hurt it. I'm reading more about Maek, and I'm sick to my stomach... I'm think I'm going to bring her to the vet (I...
Thanks.
the leg is not paralyzed, and she is still lying on her side. I lift her up and she stands on it, and then slowly squats, until she is on her side. This picture was taken this morning. I lifted her up, and as I moved the bedding, she backed away. It looks like she was using her...
