I'm still trying to convince the better half, but if that happens, is anyone interested in doing an order together? Save on shipping, beat the minimums?
Happy weekend!
Wanted to share this weird habit my hens have developed. They have such a preference for one nesting box suddenly, that they'll wait in line outside for it, and if they don't get their turn in time, they'll just lay right where they were waiting. 🤦♀️
There's also a brand of poison I've heard mixed reviews about that don't harm other animals that might eat the poisoned ones: mouse x and rat x. What was your homemade bait made of?
Congrats!!! How many chicks and what kind?!
Predators are absolutely fairly easily managed in NYC.
What's your design plan?
We have our run covered in 1/2" hardware cloth, with a 3 foot deep hardware cloth skirt around the entire run and hen house. You can also bury hardware cloth or chicken...
Spotted this guy hanging out above the coop when I let the chickens run free in the yard. Thinking about getting a guardian dog, but we *do* still live in NYC. Anyone have small or medium sized dogs that are good with their hens? Maybe with a less energetic temperament than a traditional working...
Yes. Different types of poisons cause different painful deaths. There's different treatments for animals that are in contact with those poisons depending on what type, and the treatments tend to be traumatic, though less traumatic than death, I suppose (even the Tom cat brand has different...
I was having some concerning issues with our Black Australorp (Emily Chickenson) over the past month + and a little. I'll include links at the bottom to the threads of trying to figure out what was going on if anyone wants the full history, but in short:
-started with a pale comb and loss of...
Keep in mind the expiration dates! If you have a place to easily access, you might not need some of it on hand. We're in a major city with nothing resembling a feed store for hours, so I had a lot of this stuff shipped and let other chicken keepers in this city know what I have in our first aid...
I personally am not this season because my wife said no. 😢 But, if you wait until April, Meyer Hatchery has a 3 chick minimum in the warmer months.
Not a bad idea to order together, though, to save on shipping! I'll make sure to let y'all know when I'm planning on adding to my flock!
I'm happy to report, 4 days later this chicken is starting to improve. Despite not really having any obvious symptoms of respiratory issues, (and certain signs of intestinal shed) we think that's what it is, and that she's become a bit anorexic, despite clearly having appetite, perhaps because...
So we still don't know what's going on with this chicken.
Here's more photos. Poop, comb which now has a blister kind of thing going on, and some feather loss around the comb and face. She's isolated now because we need a better scientific understanding of what she's eating and drinking...
