    broken toe

Try and set it but do not try and bandage or splint it. Maybe it is just dislocated. If it creates more discomfort and pain by trying to set it just let it be. Nature will take its course. I currently have 3 chickens with broken toes, it happens all the time. I did not intervene and they all...

INTRODUCING NEW CHICKENS TO THE FLOCK

I normally introduce the new chickens at 8 weeks but this time I was a bid late. These are now 11 weeks old. It is amazing how quickly they learn to use the escape route when things are getting too "hot" in the run. I have never lost a chicken due to injuries from the others since I have been...

INTRODUCING NEW CHICKENS TO THE FLOCK

This is how I introduce new chickens to my old flock. I have been using this method for many years with great success. The photos will tell the story. I have made this small enclosure inside my chicken run where I place food and water for the new baby chickens. On the one side, close to the...

    broken toe

The broken toe does always fall off. It depends on how serious the injury is. Even if it does fall off it is not the end of the world. The chicken can survive without one toe. We tend to be over protective. See my previous post. Let nature takes its natural course.

    WILD AFRICAN MUSCOVY DUCK

Yes it is the same in South Africa. Technically I broke the law. That is why I never clipped their wings and the goal from the beginning was to let them go when ever they are ready. They flew off yesterday afternoon but came back just before dawn. This morning they left again but now I am...

    WILD AFRICAN MUSCOVY DUCK

We knew that this day had to come, sooner than later. We noticed their unwillingness to go into their night shelter in the evenings. When inside the cage they impatiently patrolled the fence up and down and could not wait to get out in the mornings. ( I had to protect them against predators...

    WILD AFRICAN MUSCOVY DUCK

Please note that I made a mistake in the translation of the specie of these birds into English from my native Afrikaans. They are not Muscovy Duck but Spur Winged Geese.

    WILD AFRICAN MUSCOVY DUCK

One died and I sold two to a guy who keeps a huge variety of ducks and geese - almost like a bird sanctuary/bird park. We are keeping these 4. I don't think that they will leave for now. They roam free but stay in our yard. We keep them fed and supplied with enough water. They might fly of some...

    Let's see your CHICKEN TRACTORS

This is my take on a chicken tractor. It has a steel frame and covered with chicken mesh. I don't use my chicken tractor to permanently house my chickens because I have a huge coop and chicken run. It is used as a half way stop over between the brooder and the chicken run. They normally stay in...

    WILD AFRICAN MUSCOVY DUCK

Our Spur Winged Goose are now 6 weeks old and they are following us all over the yard. I have taken them out of their encolsure and they are totallly free to come and go as they pleasse. To keep them safe from predators they sleep in our enclosed entertainment arrea but are not caged in...

Chicken breeders or Folks in South Africa?

Hi I am feeding my goslings Chicken Starter up to 6 weeks and now and then some mixed grain in between for a treat. They have been free ranging since day 5 with the normal muddy mess that they make but they all seems to be doing fine.

    WILD AFRICAN MUSCOVY DUCK

Hi Buck Oaks You are correct. They are Spur-Winged Goose. (Plectropterus Gambensis) My problem is that English is not my first language and I translated their specie incorrectly from Afrikaans into English .I looked them up in my "Birds of Southern Africa" book and found their correct specie...

    WILD AFRICAN MUSCOVY DUCK

Hi Folks I thought of sharing the following photos and story with you. We are living on a grain farm in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Often wild birds would make their nests in the grain fields but unfortunately this leaves them vunrable come harvest time. About two weeks ago...
