Hen won't stand-UPDATE: About to inject Tylan, objections? (Pg. 3)

you might want to read all of the responses that I got to a thread I started two weeks ago. The symptoms you mention are similar, although not quite the same, as to symptoms we have in a young bird. You can find the thread by searching by my login, zylechicks. We have determined that our bird...

    Lame hen..is she doomed?

Thanks to all of you for your post. We have a flock of about 60 chickens and have been blessed with no disease over this time. We separated the hen as soon as she showed symptoms, and then cleaned the coop area the best we could. We used a mixture of bleach and water - not sure if that was...

    Lame hen..is she doomed?

i just posted a similar story to your last night and am thankful to have found what you wrote. We are dealing with the exact same thing and the details you provided are very helpful, although not reassuring. Our hen is about 4 months old and like yours, suddenly stopped walking. We are...

3 month old hen, golden lace wyandotte, legs collapsed

Two days ago we found one of our young hens at the bottom of her coop, not moving. She was bright eyed and seemed healthy - no obvious signs of illness. She simply would not stand up. We separated her from her flock and have kept her inside for two days. She is eating and drinking, clucking...

Can new hens with chicks be put in same pen?

We recently gave some fertilized eggs to two broody hens. The chicks all hatched at the same time and are now about two weeks old. I would like to allow both mothers, with chicks, to roam a bit in an enclosed pen. Is is safe to assume that two new mothers will occupy the same area without...

Mama is hatching first chicks...many questions!

We did put a board up this morning, so the chicks can't get out for now. I guess after that, it's just move and hope she understands this is good for her and for her new kids.

Mama is hatching first chicks...many questions!

Unfortunately, no. The nest box is part of a set and she chose the middle box. We actually tried to move her when we first got the eggs but she is a stubborn thing and would have no part of that. Got really flustered and upset so we let her be. I am guessing we will just have to force the...

Mama is hatching first chicks...many questions!

We were given some fertilized eggs by a friend so that we could place them beneath a very broody hen. Today is the day -- 2 of the 5 eggs are cracking open! Last week we tried to relocate the hen to a private nest box away from other hens. She freaked out and quickly returned to the chosen...

    Possible Dumb Question !!

We integrate the old with the new chicks by putting them into a small cooplike area that is adjacent to the coop. They don't have a ton of room but they do have an enclosed area where they can roost at night within the space. This way, they live next to the older ones for a while. We have...

    baby chicks and snakes?????

Sorry for your loss of the chicks. That would kill me. We are in a severe drought here and alot of vegetation has died and probably the normal snake diet has been affected. They are hungry and very bold, and like you know, VERY big. I will play it safe and let them grow some more. Your...

    baby chicks and snakes?????

Thanks for the input. That is exactly what I needed to know. We have rat snakes as well. We found one snake in our coop that was over six feet long. They definitely come out at night and they do manage to get into the coop. Like you, we have captured snakes and then carried them to the other...

    Aaarrrgghhhh...my GP puppy turned predator!

I agree with those who suggested a "shock collar." I know that some trainers disagree with the use of them but in our case, it has allowed us to keep our dogs and chickens. We used a collar on our young Vizsla (about 6 months old). Vizslas are bird hunters so she was wired to chase birds...

    baby chicks and snakes?????

We have a flock of 22 mature layers and are raising another 12 chicks that were born 7/21. I would like to move them into our mini chicken coop as they are almost fully feathered (wings, backs and starting to feather in neck area). They are very active and eager to get out and...well...be...

Sweet Potatoes...okay for chickens to eat

I have been told that chickens should not eat raw potatoes. I am wondering whether this is also true for sweet potatoes. Since sweet potatoes are only a distant relative of the potato I am guessing they are okay. Does anyone know for sure if i can share scraps of sweet potatoes with my flock?
