  • I'm pretty sure that my chicks are genetically racist... We had the same problem with their parents where the light brahmas keep getting eaten. Thankfully with these ones young enough to still be inside, I'm actually catching it before we have dead birds.
I can't wait for Marilyn to meet her son Monroe. It probably won't be for at least another week or so, but still. I think that Monroe is officially staying with us... if I have any say in the matter. The rest of the boys can go to anyone else, but Monroe stays.
Well, here goes another attempt at a house chicken. She keeps seeming groggy, and I have to put her into the coop at night. Her run is made of pallets, and I keep finding her wedged in the bottom of them... So she came inside last night. Hopefully, it'll be just a little TLC and then she'll be back out with her buddies.

Well, at least I know that she was warm and as comfortable as I could make her before she passed...
I've never had chicks that learned to fly as quickly as these ones have. They're just about 2 weeks old, and they're already making it the 6 inches up onto the waterer, and the 8 inches up onto the feeder(I had to put a plate over it because I'm using a bigger feeder, and they already got stuck on the inside once...)
Well... Just changed around a few coops(started some new free-rangers(who've earned their time outside the pen by being with us for over a year)), so tomorrow morning should be... interesting to say the least.

It went well... my usually too-nice BLRW rooster actually stuck up for himself(I also learned today that he does know his name, 'cause I kinda yelled at him when he went after a new roo a little too much). And everyone actually went to bed instead of up in trees(which is what happened the last time that we tried to free-range this same group last year).
Up to 22 chicks will be on sale soon! (Note: I do not ship). Not completely sure of their characteristics yet, but I should know mostly in a couple of days(I might have a feather footed, bearded chick, but since it's only one I think I will keep that one for myself, but there may be more in the coming hatches). Also, they will only be sold as straight run.
The first has pipped! Last night she was chirping, and this morning there was an external pip. Maybe she'll have hatched by the time I get home. I can't wait!(it's almost like the first time all over again) :celebrate :wee :highfive:

I don't know why I've been calling it a she... I haven't even seen it, but I have a feeling... which probably means it'll turn out to be a roo... but whatever.
