Black Sex Link chicken

Black sex-link (also called Black Stars) are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire...
Pros: Talkative, friendly, broody (which I hear is rare for this breed), smart, avid egg layer
Cons: I can't think of any cons.
Bonnie (yes, the chicken I named my farm after) is by far my favorite chicken. She was also my first. She is very friendly and even likes to be petted. She lays an egg every single day. Sometimes she even lays two in a single day. When the day comes that she stops laying, I'll just have to put her out to pasture or build her her own coop. I would recommend BSLs to anyone who likes to have a good egg layer with personality.
Pros: smart, friendly quiet.
Cons: Not a one
I have 10 of these lovely hens who have just recently started laying. I'm really pleased with them though the egg size is still pretty small, I expect they will get larger as the hens mature. I do have one that is giving me double yolkers, and that egg is HUGE, so I don't doubt that they can lay bigger. These hens are replacements for my white brahmas... they are better at feed conversion, and eat less than my last flock did.I raised them from day old chicks, they were also much more quiet than the brahma and less flighty. If you are looking for good egg production hens with nice personalities, these are your girls!

Pros: Friendly, good layers, easy to tame
Cons: Bigger breed
Love my two girls...They are just wonderful. Easy to tame and very friendly, both of mine are easy to pick up and like people. They lay on average an egg a day for the most part sometimes every other day. I do live in Michigan and do not keep lights on them so some of my egg production is due to less light during the day. They are pretty big birds and that has to be taken into count if you are planning on have just a smaller coup for them. I keep mine in a chicken tractor and have just the two girls. My chicken tractor plans said that it could hold up to six hens with this breed I think four would be pushing it...Great breed for extra large eggs and easy keeping!
Pros: funny, good layers, good size
Cons: bold, loud
Pretty Girl!
Dustbath!

With her "sisters"

Of all my girls, Sharon by BSL, was my favorite. She was a little agressive at first (we adopted her at 4 months), but she quickly became a wonderful companion and entertainer. Her eggs were medium brown with little dark brown spots, a good medium size, and layed about 5 times a week. All though she was the smallest of a 5 girls flock (others Americaunas and EE's) she ruled the roost. She kept the others in line with an occasional pecking, but they all went where she went and did what she did. There was no shyness in her, she was always the first to run to me when I came in the yard and not afraid to come right up and meet new people. For my chicken fearing friends, she was a little to bold (she would follow relentlessly, sometimes chase, but never with agression).

The only downside for a truly backyard flock is that she was very vocal and would not hesitate to jump the 8 foot fence when neighbors were out to go visit with them (luckily they didn't mind, but it could have been a bad situation depending). We ended up loosing her to what I believe was an intestional blockage from a piece of plastic bag she found while scratching for worms.

We just got a new BSL chick for the 2013 season. So far very hardy, and obviously CUTE!

I would highly recommend this breed to anyone.
Pros: Gentle, good layers, large brown eggs
Cons: None
I have 4 BSL hens and their 1st year laying we got over 1000 eggs! they went into 2nd fall molting and came out laying 1 egg a day per hen! so we expect to get over 1000 eggs again this year. I am very pleased with them. we replaced our buffs with BSL and it was worth it!

I got 2 of these as chicks and now they are around 9 months old. They are very docile and amazing egg layers. Mine follow me around the backyard and they will come when I call them. They started laying at around 7 months and they have not missed a day since. Great pets and layers. Just a great backyard chicken.
Pros: Pretty, green eyes, very curious, playfull
Cons: I have none!
This is one of my faves, and I just love there green eyes!
Pros: Natural leaders, great layers, tolerant in all climates
Cons: prone to internal laying after the age of 2-3 years.

Pros: Super layers, hardy, nice looking birds
Cons: N/A
We got 24 of the BSL's back on the first of September and I've been very pleased with them. They were 14 weeks old when we got them. They replaced my old flock of Golden Comets who were spent and they started laying right at 26 weeks right after Thanksgiving. Super layers. It's late January now and they're probably about 34 weeks old now. We're getting close to 100% egg production with 20 to 22 eggs each day. I'm betting by early spring they will be at 100%. They lay extra large to jumbo sized brown eggs. They're everything the Golden Comets were when it comes to egg laying. And I think with the ginger colored markings around the neck capes they are a really nice looking bird. They're friendly and tolerate the four guineas who are in the run with them.

Pros: Nice gentle
Cons: Non broody terrible mothers
I used to have a few but they just weren't good mothers like I needed
Pros: good meat
Cons: Feet probs
We had these for meat when I was a kid some had feet probs. assumed that it was b/c they grew so fast so I am shying away from raising these but they may have improved them since then.
Pros: friendly, curious, very entertaining
Cons: so far, I can't find any cons
I purchased 4 peeps and they have turned out to be the best chicks ever! Granted I am fairly new at this and they are still not fully grown (about 9 weeks old), but they are so friendly. they perch on my finger. they are extremely curious and will come right up to you when you open the door to the coop. They are also very entertaining. I would definitely recommend these to anyone but especially to someone just starting out. Can't wait til they start laying.

Pros: Simple yet elegant
Cons: Maybe a little too adventurous???
I had one pullet among other breeds of chicks i was raising with it but unfortunately it flew out of its fence and was killed by the rooster :( I would have really liked to have seen that one grow up into a hen :(
Pros: Mix well with other breeds
Cons: not as docile as I expected
At 4 months old I am very impressed with how beautiful these birds are becoming. I have 5 and each ones coloring is slightly different and unique. I purchased these hens because they are the queens of egg laying and are very productive based on their revues. Purchased just before Easter and I expect eggs in september or before. I have 5 breeds of hens and these have mixed well with the rest of the flock. They are not real fond of being held but come running when we have treats!

Pros: vocal,funny,interesting
Cons: a bit skittish but getting better, choosy with scraps,
Jury's still out for the most part. Love the littel creatures already, very vocal and notice everything especially my orange sparkle nail polish. I think they would have been very friendly if i had bought them younger. They were approximately 6 weeks old. I only bought 5 and lost one this week. Not because of the breed, but lack of knowledge which i am trying to remedy.
