Colombian Rock

In my experience, Columbian rocks have been the worst chickens I have ever had. While they look cool and lay good eggs, they are just so mean! They boss around other hens, peck at you, and go broody ridiculously easily.

Columbian Rocks are very friendly. One of my hens will jump up on my lap and fall asleep and then get mad if i take her off. They kind of expect all the hens to move out of their way and are noticeably at the top of the pecking order. The cock, however, can be aggressive. My cock hates everyone but me and will try to attack through the fence. On the other hand, he protects the hens very well. I lost one pullet who didn't know the danger of hawks, but he attacked a hawk that attacked a hen and saved her. He has won fights with a hawk at least three times, and gives warning signals when he sees birds, and even airplanes. I suggest hens to people who want this breed, and cocks for people who want protection, but can asset their dominance over the cock.

My Columbian Rock hens are my sweethearts! They all putter around the yard with me--- they squat when we reach for them, and most of them are happy to be held. All around friendly and happy go lucky hens.

The CR rooster is a protective, loud beast. He is good with me and the family, but he doesn't take to strangers around his girls. He also is my predator master. He will make a very specific warning call if there are any ravens/crows/dogs/eagles/predators in the area and all the girls immediately run for cover. It has helped with us free ranging the flock, and we haven't had any losses yet! (5 months) We also have a Red Rock rooster who is about as useless as a non laying, anti social hen-- but he's pretty. They both serve their purposes well but the ladies take to the CR much more readily and kind of follow him around like their white night.

Lots of eggs!!!! My 8 CR hens were the first to start laying of our 24 girls. They are also the most consistent and it seems like I'm getting more than an egg a day from a couple of them but that could be just crazy talk! We have 24 girls and not all are laying yet, and can't quite sort out who/what/when/where

All in all, these are my favourite of the breeds we have had so far. They are beautiful, sweet, and productive!

I have a hen named Lady and she's simply lovely. She's motherly to my Red Sex Link and is always first to call everyone to eat in the morning. Her plumage is beautiful to look at and she'll walk right up to me. Not as chatty as my Sex Link hens, but she does look up at me and cluck when I come in with food or the egg basket.

All in all if you're going to get a Rock hen, get Columbians. You'll get a gorgeous flock, pretty large eggs, and docile birds that are good with other breeds.

2 years ago I got my first BYC as ready-to-lay from Frey's hatchery in Ontario. We ended up with 2 RIR, 1 BR, 1 BSL and 1 Columbian Rock!!! She was our favourite! So brave and outgoing. She would jump right onto your lap looking for handouts. She was a handful. This year we got 6 new RTL hens from Frey's but got 3 BR and 3 Colombians. We weren't sure if they would be at all like our last hen but after 3 weeks they're proving to be just as much fun to have around. We let them free range as much as we can and these girls are so much fun to watch. We can't have a rooster here so they love to follow me around and see what I'm up to. Sometimes they crouch down when you walk by which I assume is a self defense thing? You can pet them and pick them up when they do it. We don't handle them too often but they don't mind it when we do.
They're very outgoing but much quieter than our barred rocks and the RIR we had in the past.They're great producers in the egg department. A touch on the small side but the eggs come every day.

Colombian Rocks are big beautiful birds, full of personality and I would recommend them to anyone.

i have had them over the years, and i have learned over those years that they r good flyers,a bit aggressive, and nice big egg layers. and even the hens are a bit aggressive.but i have learned to love this breed.

I got my start in Columbian Plymouth Rocks (in LF) back in 2010 from a trio that came in from Canada to the Ohio Nationals. They are typical Plymouth Rocks; great dual purpose birds. After 3 breeding seasons I am close to having a few that I would consider showing.

My males are over 10 lbs and females are 8lbs +. This color variety is one of the most rarely seen in Plymouth Rocks and good ones are hard to find.

I have had a few of my go broody and those that do are excellent mothers.

Eggs are normally in the large to jumbo category, and they are consistent layers. The addition of light IS needed during periods of "shortened daylight" in order to maintain consistency of laying

I do regularly sell both hatching eggs as well as chicks/started birds.

These are, in my opinion the perfect chickens! (just my opinion) there is never a dull moment with them. these chickens literally have there own personality's. and I have yet to find a con that these chickens have. however, all the other "pro's" for them is that they are not flighty, but I strongly disagree. for mine anyway, I have a 4foot fence and they hop out of that like its nothing. as a matter of fact, they fly 10feet into a tree above there coop where they sleep. but I find this a pro. I like to let them be in the coop and pen our outside wondering around when they want. but, back to the chickens. they lay lots of eggs, 1-2 a day, and they are huge! largest one I have had yet was 2" wide and 3" long. if you are considering to get these chickens for more than just getting eggs and also to get a laugh or two out of them, Do it! they are fun to have and easy to maintain.

I have one CR rooster, and he was the runt of the chicks I had gotten. When he was new, I was afraid he would not make it due to his behavior: head down, eyes closed, lets other chicks run him over, very small...but he grew up to be a giant who is fiercely protective of my hens!

He escaped the run when one of my dogs went after an escaped hen, and fought until he couldn't. And even after that, he still challenges the dogs through the fence. He is very brave and I have never met another rooster like him. My neighbor has three herself and she says she has never had such tough, ready-to-go roosters before them. In fact, yesterday when I scared a hen by picking her up from behind, my roo ran in all fluffed up and kicked me in the knee! When I set her down, he stopped and herded her away with him.

If I ever need a rooster to protect future hens, I would consider a CR first.

Of all the hens that I have raised these still are my favorites because they are so hardy in the long winter months here. Although they will not out produce the Rhode Island Red hen egg wise they endure the winters here a little better than them. Roosters are also not as aggressive with the hens as well which is nice when the hens have to be cooped up six months out of the year.

A Colombian Rock is a great addition for any flock. These birds have a pretty feather pattern, similar to that of a Light Brahma and Colombian Wyandotte. Hens are a great producer of large light brown eggs, and great lap chickens. Roosters are calm and docile, also. They are very cold tolerant and bug vacuums. The hen's weight is approximately 4 lbs. at 19 weeks and close to 6 lbs. at end of lay for females. Males are approximately 1½ lbs. heavier than females. They are great show birds, admitted in 1960 and recognized by the APA as single-combed and clean-legged. If you want a great layer of large eggs and a docile bird, choose Colombian Rocks!
