Golden Comet

We raised 2 Golden Comets along with 2 Black Australorps. The Comets are from Mt Healthy and are a confirmed Rhode Island Red x Rhode Island White cross. As chicks, they were very independent and quiet compared to the constantly fussy Australorps. This continued into adulthood. They began laying large brown eggs at around 20 weeks, with one Comet having a 44 day laying streak! Both Comets ended up feather picking; one out of boredom or bully tendencies, and the other for nutritional reasons. I frequently see this breed called out in feather picking and bullying threads. They seem to do best with their own kind in a large free-range environment, and benefit from a high-protein (20%) feed. While they're easy to handle, both Comets were often nippy with our hands and clothing (likely looking for treats).

We got two Golden Comets among our first six chickens. These girls, since they started laying 10 months ago, only miss laying about one day a month. And their eggs are huge – at least jumbo — and crack nicely (not true of some of our others). Plus they are friendly. Our chickens were free ranging while I picked Japanese beetles and they were the ones underfoot waiting for the treats, while the others were off doing their chickeny thing.

I enjoy these chickens they have been easy to manage, I have a Rhode Island red rooster with them, and its an awesome team!

We have been keeping Golden Comets for 3 years - the whole time we have been keeping chickens. They are awesome birds as far as laying and non broodiness goes, but they peck me and are very aggressive toward me often.
