Rhode Island Red Bantam

I have only purchased one Rhode Island Red Bantam and they would probably be my top favorite breed that I have ever owned. In the Spring of 2023, I bought four bantams from Tractor Supply: an Old English Game Bantam mix, a Golden Sebright, a Silver Sebright and a Rhode Island Red Bantam. I named the fourth one Ruby, and she quickly became my favorite flock member of all time. She is the sweetest and friendliest chicken with the cutest appearance, and she also has an adorable voice－she does not make normal clucking noises, and instead makes squeaks and cries. Egg production is not an important factor for me, but Ruby seems to produce an egg almost every day, whether there is a thunderstorm or a predator that showed up during the night. Ruby is currently being trained to ride in the car, and she enjoys it very much. When she gets her harness and diaper in, she will be riding places with me.

The bantam form originated in England in the 1920s. The laying power of the bantams is even better than their big brothers and sisters. With proper care, she will continue to lay throughout the winter.

Here too there is a variety in comb shape.
Unlike the large Red, the bantams can be kept just about anywhere as they require relatively little space.

If youre considering purchasing one of these birds, do. They make great first-time chickens and are great with kids. :cd

Ours came from Cackle Hatchery. Beautiful color. Extremely sweet hen wants to be picked up and follows us around the yard. Good little layer. Great pet chicken.

This strain from Cackle Hatchery is very typical of the original standard Rhode Island Red. These are not flighty birds at all. They have short wings compared to other bantams. Feathering is dark and beautifully designed. Roos seem to mature earlier than pullets. Of 16 live chicks delivered I lost 2 within the 1st two weeks. The other 14 are very healthy. Seven pullets / Seven Cockerels. Pullets didn't begin laying until the end of their 24th week. Egg size range from PeeWee to Small. Averaging 3 light tan eggs per day. Of the cockerels, I kept the one with the largest comb and wattles which I favor.

Overall a great chicken. Love the pretty feathers on them!

i have a trio of RIR and soon as I got them I loved them. I show them and I have already won a lot of prises with them. but it is hard to breed I put the hens with the rooster and they have not layed yet.

Love these birds! They are so sweet, but they tend to be flighty. I guess that's a good and bad thing. My RIS survived a coyote attack, more like massacre because she was so flighty. You can get a good relationship with them too. Check out my thread on how!

The RIR's were the most curious, bravest, seemingly intelligent chicks in the brooder. Always investigating things when out socializing with us. Were friendly, but didn't want to sit with us much, always on the go. Because I had to order s/r, ordered 5 to be sure I got pullets. And because I wanted to try out other breeds, ended up rehoming all, but one (am kicking myself for that decision, but hey, I discovered they're a breed I will get more of in the future, which was my reason for trying breeds to determine what I liked). Am friends with the person I rehomed the others with...have been great birds for him.

The female I kept, Rose, is a doll. Always the first to greet me at the door. Always under my feet too...I have to move her out of the way with my foot so I don't step on her, lol! She's the lowest in the pecking order and will run behind me if the other hens get after her while I'm putting out treats (she'll run in, swipe a treat, a higher ranking hen will get after her, and she'll dart behind the safety of my legs). She's the friendliest in my flock and is still the most curious and seemingly intelligent of my girls...the most animated too. She has to investigate everything I have and everything I'm doing as well. If I'm busy in the run and I feel something picking at my jeans or shoelaces (and untying them), I know it's Rose, lol! She's a really good little layer too.

Will always have this breed for as long as I have chickens and would definitely recommend them.

I have a breeding pair of bantam RIR's. My rooster is in charge of 20 hens, both LF and bantams. He is the nicest rooster i have had. My kids can pick him up and carry him around like he is one of the other pets. He loves to eat out of my hand. As a plus i breed him to my Lf Dominique and get sex linked chicks to sale. My hen is a great layer of small eggs when she is not broody. Her eggs are actually larger then Bantam size eggs and some are close to medium size eggs they sale at the stores. My hen also lets you pick her up. She is at the top of the pecking order of the bantams and also a couple steps up from the bottom of the LF girls.

They are good birds Mine is still a pullet though so not sure about that part...

Rhode Island Red Bantams are very small, sweet, flighty, tame birds. They love to sit on shoulders and eat treats from your hands! They don't need a super big run, but work better with other bantams. I reccomend these birds for a good little pet!
