I love my Red Star! I have five chickens and four different breeds but my Red Star is definitely the best layer. She is very quiet and is very smart. Since she is small, it is easy to pick her up easily and when I do pick her up, she is very calm and quiet. She lets me look her over without protest.

I have raised day old to 10wks and also recently added two 21 wks old, they are so friendly, easy to pick up, the 21 wks old I bought started laying the following day, I had not expected that as I had read that chickens need time to get adjusted to new homes.
I've read that they don't run away from predators, mine rush back to the coop when they see hawks. Very pleased with them

My red stars are some of my favorite chickens, I currently have 4 and they are by far my most friendly. Almost to friendly, they not only want some attention, they DEMAND it. Any outstretched arm or lap must be immediately occupied. Very reliable layers, always get 3-4 eggs from my 4 hens daily, rain or shine. They are the top of the pecking order and the undeniable queens of the coop, I was having some trouble with them getting a little over aggressive with my very docile brahmas but after the first year everyone knows there place and get along great. Definitely a chicken to have if you want tame hens.

My Red Star, Marmalade, is the sweetest bird in my flock. She loves being around people, gets along with all the other birds and I have no problem picking her up. She was the first to start laying and has now laid me 12 eggs in her first 13 days of laying! I'm new to chickens, but that seems to be a pretty impressive start! She also started laying just after Christmas and through the coldest days we've had in 20 years! It hit -7F one morning... still I got a fresh laid egg for breakfast!

Cons: I really can't think of any cons, other than they all look similar, so it can be hard to tell them apart. Mine have variations of white with the red and some are more red and some are more orange, but they are similar in appearance.
Pros: So far, they are the smartest breed I've had. They are curious, friendly, and productive. I can't believe I never tried them before. Now I will always have some. They are much friendlier than my Easter Eggers and are the first ones to approach you. They start laying so early. They are rated at 4 1/2 because I would give Brahmas a 5 star and the Red Stars are my second choice (so far). The Red Stars are better than my Black Australorps.

These girls lay nice brown eggs for me every morning and they have been laying since they were 4 months old... Just this week I got a 4.1 oz egg from these girls they usually weigh about 2-3 oz but sometimes more... I have black stars and brown stars both are just as good... But I like the black ones better they are prettier than the brown... I have a bunch of bantam chicks (and a bantam rooster) that are full grown and the stars are mean to them (they are all afraid of them) since they are younger and half the size of the stars...

These are the first chickens I have ever had being a city gal turned country - got three 19 mos old pullets from our local feed store...waited patiently for that first egg...now all 3 lay every day, never a problem, sweet and they are pets...I will replace any with the same breed as they are fantastic chickens. with just the two of us, we have more eggs than we can use/eat...so friends and co-workers and neighbors benefit from the great fresh eggs!

My Red Sex link roo was a big surprise, he was supposed to be a buff orpington hen. He turned out to be a welcome addition to our flock. He is so beautiful and we haven't lost a hen to coons or coyotes since getting him. He has never attacked me, but my dad has told me he went after him. I didn't see it so I don't believe it. The only problem I have is he overbreeds my hens, I can't show any of my largefowl because he has ripped their back feathers out. He has been condemned to a separate pen.

I have a small flock, and I purchase my chickens from mypetchicken.com in small batches. I usually fret over whether or not my chicks are male or female, but with Red Stars, you do not have to worry...the males and females have differing feather colors upon hatching.
I find the Red Stars to be friendly, easy to catch and pick up, and good layers. They are the perfect 'starter' chicken for a family with children.
While I used to agree with the other reviews about them being rather homely looking, I have changed my opinon. I currently have four Red Stars and they are each uniquely beautiful. Some are more orange, some are more white, some are copper. The look so nice when the free range in green grass.

I have three black stars. They are probably the best egg layers you will get. Red stars are not the prettiest breed and not as good egg layers as black stars.

I've found Red Stars to be very good layers, and some of their eggs are enormous. If you are looking for a chicken with a good personality, then I would recommend a star. They are usually good 'people-chickens' and will try to get into your house to be with you! However if you're after show chickens, stars are not the prettiest chickens around. Also keep in mind that sometimes (not often) they can be prone to bullying other hens.

Pros: Best egg layers in my flock. I can always count on them to lay especially during cold months. Very hearty birds. One of mine got attacked by an owl, and as bad as the wound looked, she toughed it out. You would have never known there was anything wrong with her, except for a few feathers out of place! One of them is the dominant hen; the head honcho, also with a fairly muffled and pleasant egg song. quiet enough to keep in my urban backyard. The other one has a terrible egg song LOL!

Cons: They were sold to me as Plymouth Barred Rocks, I ended up with Black Stars, but it worked out in the end. Love these birds.

I picked these chickens because I KNEW I'd be getting girls (because of the color difference). They're great layers but a teeny bit aggressive. They tend to peck me when I'm in there with food or water and they have pecked visitors before. They aren't bad- it's not like I'd get rid of them, but I don't think I'll get anymore.

Can't say enough good things about this breed. They aren't susceptible to frostbite (toes or comb). A bit bossy if allowed to become head of the flock, but always friendly and very good guards of the flock. Their laying habits and eggs are even better than Leghorns'. If let out early enough, they will forage most of their food, coming back in the evening with a full crop. They are very smart, not flighty, and one of the best all-around chickens there are.
