Will a mother hen accept late chicks after she leaves the nest?

How sad! It is really sweet to see both hens trying to hard to teach the little one how to be a chicken, it breaks my heart that one might have to lose her baby without getting any new chicks!

Will a mother hen accept late chicks after she leaves the nest?

We recently had two of our broody hens attempt to hatch a clutch of eggs with terrible results. Out of the 12 eggs we set under two hens, only one chick hatched. So now we have two eager mothers fighting over one tiny baby, and we would really like to add in at least one or two more chicks to...

Pullet not eating, drinking, laying - when to euthanize

Thank you so much for the feedback, I really appreciate your advice and help. Daisy is still hanging in there, but only barely. We've been able to feed her small amounts of feed dissolved in water and the occasional piece of grape or mellon, but she refuses almost everything and is definitely...

Pullet not eating, drinking, laying - when to euthanize

I have a 10-month old silkie pullet who has suddenly become very sick, and I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not it is time to let go. About three weeks ago we noticed that she was dragging one of her wings. Since she was otherwise healthy and did not seem to be in pain, we splinted...

    sebright thread

Sebright experts, could you take a look at this picture and tell me if this could be a Sebright egg? I was expecting small white eggs, but this morning we found a small tinted mystery egg in the nesting box and were wondering if it could be from one of our Silver or Golden Sebright pullets. They...

Need advice ASAP - possibly sold a sick chicken

Thanks so much for the advice, I'm really struggling over what to do. I think we will keep an eye on her for a few more days and then contact the seller to see if she will accept a return. Really sad, the new pullet is so sweet and we were really looking forward to finally getting a blue egg :(

Need advice ASAP - possibly sold a sick chicken

This weekend we purchased an 8-week-old Easter Egger pullet to add to our small backyard flock, but we are starting to worry that we have been sold a sick chicken. We did notice that a few of the other pullets on the farm had infected eyes, but the lady we purchased the pullet from assured us...

    My First Egg!

Congratulations on your first egg, so exciting!! I would take the egg away so it doesn't spoil, she will probably lay another one for you soon. I have the same problem with talking too much about chickens in real life, hanging out here helps a lot. Welcome! :)

    What attacked my chicken

Me too, so frustrating! We ended up vaccinating the rest of our flock so that none of the other birds would get sick, but the two sick birds don't seem too bad. They've lost a little bit of weight but otherwise seem pretty happy and healthy. All the best with your bird, hope she recovers quickly!

    What attacked my chicken

That looks like it could be fowl pox to me, it is a virus that is transmitted by mosquitos. My flock is going through the same thing right now and there isn't much that can be done about it, but apparently most chickens make it through just fine. Here is some more info...

So my Serama Can't Decide if it is a Pullet or a Cockerel

I don't know anything about Seramas, but "he" looks pretty feminine to me. I think gender in chickens is more confusing that you would think!

So my Serama Can't Decide if it is a Pullet or a Cockerel

Definitely post a picture, I'm curious! We also have a "cockerel" that crows and has developed male features, but acts just like a hen. Very strange.

    R.I.P. William I'll miss u

I'm so sorry for your loss. My chickens are like pets to me, so I know how very attached we can get to our birds and how devastating it can be to lose them. It sounds like you took very good care of her and loved her very much. From the symptoms you listed, it sounds like she might have had...

    Avian Pox

Thanks so much responding and letting me know what to expect, it's nice to talk to someone else going through the same thing. :) I went to our local feed store during my lunch break today and they had exactly one dose of the pox vaccine left in their fridge so we picked it up and will vaccinate...

    Avian Pox

Hi Jill, We are fairly close to you, in College Station, and one of my birds has just started showing symptoms of fowl pox too. It must be going around with all of the mosquitos in this area! How long was your Belgian d'Anvers sick before she started to recover? If you already have the...

We Unexpectedly and Suddenly Lost Our Rooster, In a Puzzling Way.

I'm so sorry for your loss, he was a beautiful rooster!! I don't really have enough experience to have any ideas on what might have happened to him, but I don't think you should be too hard on yourselves, there was nothing you could have done.
