    Cuddle Puddle!

These girls aren't too old at a bit over 3 months, but apparently you're never too old for a cuddle puddle.

    Limping Pullet

Got a crate at PetSmart yesterday and the invalid is ensconced therein. I might put the divider that came with it in to reduce the space a bit more to encourage her to stay put. She's preening, eating and drinking, and her head and tail are mostly up (except when I took the picture of course,)...

    June 2025 hatch-a-long

I feel your pain. Out of the 14 eggs I started with, I've ended up with TWO that might make it to lockdown Tuesday.

    Limping Pullet

None that I could see or feel. I think limiting her activity is really the only thing I can do.

    Limping Pullet

It might do, although I didn't want to mess with it too much. P!nk is just at 3 months, and they're fed Purina Organic Starter/Grower from TS with a bit of Cluck & Co. Organic scratch usually every day along with the occasional handful of dried mealworms. She seems to be eating and drinking fine.

    RoseHawke's Hatching Journey

Aaaaand, the 14-day candle isn't any better. The two questionable are definitely clear, and two look like they're quitters. I'm down to two from fourteen and no guarantees that they'll hatch.

    Limping Pullet

P!nk has been limping for about a week now, reluctant to come down or up the ramp, and not really wanting to put weight on one of her legs. Of course, you usually think the first and worst ("OMG! Marek's!") Mr. RoseHawke is usually the one to let the girls out in the morning, and they're usually...

What did you do in the garden today?

I haven't even seen a tomato hornworm in more than a decade. We have a fair number of wild birds that we feed, and I can only assume that they go after assorted bugs as "snacks" in between chowing down at the feeders.

What did you do in the garden today?

Planted a bunch of Dahlia tubers in a bed that doesn't have anything in it. They've either been sitting in a box or a bag for months, amazingly, most of them were actually sprouting 😳 . At least that let me know which way was presumably "up". I've got a bunch of bearded iris tubers that are in...

What did you do in the garden today?

Finally getting around to getting the garden in order after several years of neglect. Got some more of the old weed barrier up this morning, and we had a ChipDrop yesterday! So we're getting started on laying it in the aisles. What a difference from what it was last year at this time! We're...

    RoseHawke's Hatching Journey

Not surprisingly, with moving the lid and with the removal of some mass in the form of 10 eggs, the temperature seems to be running a smidge higher than it was, at 99.5-100° instead of 99.3-99.7 as before. I'll give it another hour so I can make sure, then see if I can't turn the temp down a hair.

    June 2025 hatch-a-long

Day 7 candle, four for sure, two questionable, the rest clear and blood rings. If any make it to hatching (at this point I'm not too hopeful,) these chick(s) are going to be more precious than gold.

    RoseHawke's Hatching Journey

*sigh* Welp. I just did the 7-day candle, and out of 14 eggs I've got 4 definite, a couple of questionable, and the rest clear or blood rings. Oh, well, I knew this was a gamble when I took it on. Hopefully those four will make it to hatching although I'm not going to hold my breath.

    Hardcloth

Just be sure it actually is galvanized. During the height of the pandemic, I ordered a 4'x100' roll of "galvanized" hardware cloth and while it was a nice, heavy cloth, it most definitely wasn't galvanized and started rusting within a couple of weeks.

    RoseHawke's Hatching Journey

I think I've finally gotten a handle on what's going on with the temperature. I believe that the nut that is supposed to hold the temperature control in place either wasn't tight, or more likely, wasn't tight enough. The last time I jiggered with the heating control I really cranked down on...

    RoseHawke's Hatching Journey

Keeping the temperature stable now is proving difficult. I'll think I've got it about right, it stays there for a while, then it inevitably goes up. The only thing I can think of is that the turner is causing it to drift since it was good and stable before I plugged in the turner. It didn't...

    RoseHawke's Hatching Journey

We're expecting some severe weather overnight. Recalling the last time I did this, I had Sunny (the significant other,) haul out the generator from the outbuilding. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. The last time as I recall, the power went out early one...

    RoseHawke's Hatching Journey

I decided I might want to make my own thread as a way to keep my observations regarding this venture all in one place should I ever decide to repeat this madness again ;) with this same incubator. The incubator in question is a 1602N Hova-bator with fan and Incuturner. This is the setup as of...

    June 2025 hatch-a-long

One thing about this Hova-Bator, I'd forgotten how loud the turner and fan is. The little Chinese unit I've got next to it is dead silent. I moved the eggs out of their little cups and cranked up the turner. I've got a 5# and a 3# hand weight on the top to damp the vibration (I can't really feel...
