I don't know if you've ever tried them, but I've found hair sticks work really well for me. I have a ton of really fine hair, so keeping it up without breaking is a challenge. Hair clips never worked as they just slide right out the moment I start moving and with hair ties I would have to have...
The right and middle chicks are both red sexlinks. You can see the red feathers with white patterning coming in on their wings. Because of that, my guess is the left most is also a red sexlink. There's a chance it could be a buff orpington, but I'd bet they all came from the same bin. A bonus...
I've never raised them myself, but I've heard good things about Freedom Ranger Hatchery's line of New Hampshire Reds. Apparently they still breed them for dual purpose flocks.
I think someone on here got a bunch and they were very meaty birds that grew quickly, but could still move around...
So I might be able to help you understand this.
There are around 13 genes that add brown shell pigment to eggs. Some of those genes are sex-linked, so the brown egged hen with the blue egged roo will pass her sex-linked brown egg genes to only her sons. This means the pullets are lacking some...
The comb on your chick is a mix of the single comb and the v-comb of the houdan. That cross will produce birds with a combined comb type, resulting is a split single comb.
I believe @JacinLarkwell is familiar with this phenotype and should be able to give you more information as to what the...
My best guess would be the blue copper marans is the middle photo since it has heavily feathered legs. I believe the one you are missing is the blue cuckoo marans, since I'm not seeing even the slightest trace of barring on the other two. That leaves it between olive egger and Australorpe for...
If the white stripe is over a black spot, then yes. I've seen barring on a Cornish Cross that had a spot of leakage.
Pay close to any spots that appear in their feathers, and hopefully you will get your answer.
To add to the craziness, I'm not even sure if they have any Americana in them. They appear to have single combs and no beards, traits I would expect if they had any Americana or Ameruacana ancestry. At least pea combs because it is linked to the blue egg gene.
I almost wonder if these were the...
Sounds like Fleet Farm is getting their chicks from Hoover's. I've noticed in recent years they've started selling what the call Easter Eggers alongside their "Americanas." Both are Easter Eggers. The Americanas are your traditional Easter Eggers with muffs, beards, and pea combs. Their Easter...
I'm happy to help! That was one of the reasons I updated so much. All the other threads on similar injuries are what gave me the confidence that she could heal. I hope you get your fox problem sorted out.
I am happy to repot Delta is back with the flock now and is completely healed up.
She was separated the day she got attacked, so about a month ago. I was really just basing it on how long it took her wound to heal. If she still had a significant injury right now, I would still have her separate.
If you're dealing with something similar, then I would recommend you make your...
This will probably be my last post on Delta before starting reintegration. She is doing absolutely amazing! It is completely unbelievable how much she has healed. All that is left is a small scratch on her side. I'll try to get a photo of her today, I thought I got one last night but apparently...
Figured I'd give an update on our girl. Delta is healing amazingly well and is starting to regrow her feathers. Honeycomb did break her broodiness and got returned to the flock. I also did this due to some bullying by Delta which caused Honey to hide in the corner. Nothing hard, but I didn't...
Unfortunately, no. That cross would produce silver pullets and golden (silver/gold) cockerels. On hatch day, they would look pretty much the same. The mahogany may mess with the results, but I could only see it making it harder to tell the pullets apart.
The best way to remember how the...
I agree completely. It was really nice to hear them talking to each other today and snuggling up to sleep. It was actually one of the first times I'd heard Delta clucking since I brought her in.
I found a shirt and figured out how to wrap Delta in it so she can't get to her side. Even the extra small was a little large, so I cut it and tied it snug around her. Her wound is still looking good and the sneezing stopped, so I do think it was ointment up her nose.
I did end up putting...
