I have a pip 😲 .
Day 19. These are bantam cochins. The average weight of the eggs was only about 38g.
Color me astonished. Still a long way to go, but I suppose that's something.
I am DONE with the Hova-bator. It takes constantly fiddling to get it to the proper temperature range, and once you get it there it seems fine, but as soon as you turn your back on it, the temp is either too high or too low again. You think you've got an idea of how far to move the adjusting...
Got a crate at PetSmart yesterday and the invalid is ensconced therein. I might put the divider that came with it in to reduce the space a bit more to encourage her to stay put. She's preening, eating and drinking, and her head and tail are mostly up (except when I took the picture of course,)...
It might do, although I didn't want to mess with it too much. P!nk is just at 3 months, and they're fed Purina Organic Starter/Grower from TS with a bit of Cluck & Co. Organic scratch usually every day along with the occasional handful of dried mealworms. She seems to be eating and drinking fine.
Aaaaand, the 14-day candle isn't any better. The two questionable are definitely clear, and two look like they're quitters. I'm down to two from fourteen and no guarantees that they'll hatch.
P!nk has been limping for about a week now, reluctant to come down or up the ramp, and not really wanting to put weight on one of her legs. Of course, you usually think the first and worst ("OMG! Marek's!") Mr. RoseHawke is usually the one to let the girls out in the morning, and they're usually...
I haven't even seen a tomato hornworm in more than a decade. We have a fair number of wild birds that we feed, and I can only assume that they go after assorted bugs as "snacks" in between chowing down at the feeders.
Planted a bunch of Dahlia tubers in a bed that doesn't have anything in it. They've either been sitting in a box or a bag for months, amazingly, most of them were actually sprouting 😳 . At least that let me know which way was presumably "up".
I've got a bunch of bearded iris tubers that are in...
Finally getting around to getting the garden in order after several years of neglect. Got some more of the old weed barrier up this morning, and we had a ChipDrop yesterday! So we're getting started on laying it in the aisles. What a difference from what it was last year at this time!
We're...
Not surprisingly, with moving the lid and with the removal of some mass in the form of 10 eggs, the temperature seems to be running a smidge higher than it was, at 99.5-100° instead of 99.3-99.7 as before. I'll give it another hour so I can make sure, then see if I can't turn the temp down a hair.
Day 7 candle, four for sure, two questionable, the rest clear and blood rings. If any make it to hatching (at this point I'm not too hopeful,) these chick(s) are going to be more precious than gold.
*sigh* Welp. I just did the 7-day candle, and out of 14 eggs I've got 4 definite, a couple of questionable, and the rest clear or blood rings. Oh, well, I knew this was a gamble when I took it on. Hopefully those four will make it to hatching although I'm not going to hold my breath.
Just be sure it actually is galvanized. During the height of the pandemic, I ordered a 4'x100' roll of "galvanized" hardware cloth and while it was a nice, heavy cloth, it most definitely wasn't galvanized and started rusting within a couple of weeks.
I think I've finally gotten a handle on what's going on with the temperature. I believe that the nut that is supposed to hold the temperature control in place either wasn't tight, or more likely, wasn't tight enough. The last time I jiggered with the heating control I really cranked down on...
Keeping the temperature stable now is proving difficult. I'll think I've got it about right, it stays there for a while, then it inevitably goes up. The only thing I can think of is that the turner is causing it to drift since it was good and stable before I plugged in the turner. It didn't...
